Deprived of livelihood, driven into exile from the realm, we would fall into ruin—bereft of all enjoyments, displaced from our station, and without resources.

english translation

O Sañjaya, through your talk of “sons” you have produced a Kali-like condition—bringing disrepute among the virtuous and tending toward the destruction of the family line.

english translation

May no woman ever give birth to such a son—without righteous indignation, without initiative, without strength—one who becomes a source of satisfaction to adversaries.

english translation

Do not blaze merely as smoke; advance decisively and neutralize hostile forces. Burn as a foremost threat to adversaries—even if only for a moment.

english translation

A person is ‘a man’ only to this extent: that he does not tolerate affront and does not submit to incapacity. One who is merely forbearing and without indignation is, in this rhetoric, neither woman nor man.
