These senses, when ungovernable, are sufficient even to ruin a person; like untrained, uncontrollable horses on the road, they imperil an incompetent charioteer.

english translation

Whoever, without first conquering himself, seeks to control his ministers—being unconquered in self and with unconquered ministers—declines helplessly.

english translation

He who first conquers himself—as though he were a territory—then seeks to master ministers and adversaries; his effort is not futile.

english translation

Prosperity in full measure attends the ruler whose senses are obedient, whose ministers are disciplined, who applies punishment with steadiness toward offenders, and who acts only after examination—firm and composed.

english translation

Desire and anger, both lodged within the body, plunder discernment—like two fish trapped beneath a net of small meshes.
