Yet, my friend, I wish to say this, as you knew me in former days: I am not now so wealthy; indeed, my resources have diminished, my friend.

english translation

And I am not able to make your coming futile, O bird; nor am I willing to render false the expectation of this Brahmin-sage.

english translation

Therefore I will give that which will accomplish this objective. For one who approaches and returns with hope extinguished, indeed, brings ruin upon a family.

english translation

Nothing more blameworthy than this is spoken of, O Vainateya: in the world, to eat according to one’s desire and then say, ‘Give—there is nothing,’ (refusing after enjoying one’s own sufficiency).

english translation

A man who is thwarted and unfulfilled—though honored in society—when his aims are obstructed, may inflict harm even upon the sons and grandsons of one who does not satisfy the requests of petitioners.
