अगस्त्यश चापि भगवान एतस्मिन काल एव तु पितॄन ददर्श गर्ते वै लम्बमानान अधॊमुखान ॥ ३-९४-११ ॥

'Meanwhile, the illustrious Agastya saw his deceased ancestors hanging in a pit, their heads turned downwards.' ॥ 3-94-11 ॥

english translation

agastyaza cApi bhagavAna etasmina kAla eva tu pitRRna dadarza garte vai lambamAnAna adhòmukhAna ॥ 3-94-11 ॥

सॊ ऽपृच्छल लम्बमानांस तान भवन्त इह किं पराः संतानहेतॊर इति ते तम ऊचुर बरह्मवादिनः ॥ ३-९४-१२ ॥

'He asked those individuals suspended in the pit, 'What is the matter with you?' To this, the learned speakers of the Vedas replied, 'We seek offspring.'' ॥ 3-94-12 ॥

english translation

sò 'pRcchala lambamAnAMsa tAna bhavanta iha kiM parAH saMtAnahetòra iti te tama Ucura barahmavAdinaH ॥ 3-94-12 ॥

ते तस्मै कथयाम आसुर वयं ते पितरः सवकाः गर्तम एतम अनुप्राप्ता लम्बामः परसवार्थिनः ॥ ३-९४-१३ ॥

'And they also said, 'We are your ancestors, and it is for the sake of offspring that we remain suspended in this pit.'' ॥ 3-94-13 ॥

te tasmai kathayAma Asura vayaM te pitaraH savakAH gartama etama anuprAptA lambAmaH parasavArthinaH ॥ 3-94-13 ॥

यदि नॊ जनयेथास तवम अगस्त्यापत्यम उत्तमम सयान नॊ ऽसमान निरयान मॊक्षस तवं च पुत्राप्नुया गतिम ॥ ३-९४-१४ ॥

'O Agastya, if you can grant us a worthy son, we may be freed from this hell, and you too will attain the blessed state of those with offspring.' ॥ 3-94-14 ॥

yadi nò janayethAsa tavama agastyApatyama uttamama sayAna nò 'samAna nirayAna mòkSasa tavaM ca putrApnuyA gatima ॥ 3-94-14 ॥

Endowed with great energy and steadfast in truth and righteousness, Agastya replied, 'O Pitris, I will fulfill your desire. May your anxiety be dispelled.'
