बृहदश्व उवाच उत्सृज्य दमयन्तीं तु नलॊ राजा विशां पते ददर्श दावं दह्यन्तं महान्तं गहने वने ॥ ३-६३-१ ॥
'Brihadashva said, "O king, after leaving Damayanti, Nala beheld a mighty blaze consuming the dense forest around him."' ॥ 3-63-1 ॥
english translation
तत्र शुश्राव मध्ये ऽगनौ शब्दं भूतस्य कस्य चित अभिधाव नलेत्य उच्चैः पुण्यश्लॊकेति चासकृत ॥ ३-६३-२ ॥
'Amidst the roaring flames, Nala heard the voice of a mysterious being, repeatedly calling, "O righteous Nala, come to me."' ॥ 3-63-2 ॥
english translation
मा भैर इति नलश चॊक्त्वा मध्यम अग्नेः परविश्य तम ददर्श नागराजानं शयानं कुण्डलीकृतम ॥ ३-६३-३ ॥
'Responding with "Fear not," he stepped into the heart of the fire and saw a great serpent coiled within.' ॥ 3-63-3 ॥
english translation
स नागः पराञ्जलिर भूत्वा वेपमानॊ नलं तदा उवाच विद्धि मां राजन नागं कर्कॊटकं नृप ॥ ३-६३-४ ॥
'The serpent, trembling and with hands folded in reverence, spoke to Nala, saying, "O king, know that I am Karkotaka, the serpent by name."' ॥ 3-63-4 ॥

मया परलब्धॊ बरह्मर्षिर अनागाः सुमहातपाः तेन मन्युपरीतेन शप्तॊ ऽसमि मनुजाधिप ॥ ३-६३-५ ॥
'I had deceived the great Rishi Narada, a sage of immense ascetic merit, and in his wrath, he cursed me, O king of men, with these very words:' ॥ 3-63-5 ॥
