[वै] सुदीर्घम उष्णं निःश्वस्य धृतराष्ट्रॊ ऽमबिका सुतः अब्रवीत संजयं सूतम आमन्त्र्य भरतर्षभ ।। ३-४८-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaishampayana said: Breathing a long, hot sigh, Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambika, Addressed Sanjaya, the charioteer, saying, O bull among the Bharatas:' ।। 3-48-1 ।।

english translation

[vai] sudIrghama uSNaM niHzvasya dhRtarASTrò 'mabikA sutaH abravIta saMjayaM sUtama Amantrya bharatarSabha || 3-48-1 ||

hk transliteration

देवपुत्रौ महाभागौ देवराजसमद्युती नकुलः सहदेवश च पाण्डवौ युद्धदुर्मदौ ।। ३-४८-२ ।।

sanskrit

'O charioteer, I find no peace, day or night, as I reflect on my sons' misdeeds from gambling and the remarkable virtues of the Pandavas—heroism, patience, and unity. Among them, Nakula and Sahadeva, born of celestial origin, shine like the chief of the gods and are invincible in battle.' ।। 3-48-2 ।।

english translation

devaputrau mahAbhAgau devarAjasamadyutI nakulaH sahadevaza ca pANDavau yuddhadurmadau || 3-48-2 ||

hk transliteration

दृढायुधौ दूरपातौ युद्धे च कृतनिश्चयौ शीघ्रहस्तौ दृढक्रॊधौ नित्ययुक्तौ तरस्विनौ ।। ३-४८-३ ।।

sanskrit

'They are skilled in wielding weapons, capable of long-range shots, resolute in battle, quick of hand, with an easily kindled wrath, great steadiness, and remarkable agility.' ।। 3-48-3 ।।

english translation

dRDhAyudhau dUrapAtau yuddhe ca kRtanizcayau zIghrahastau dRDhakròdhau nityayuktau tarasvinau || 3-48-3 ||

hk transliteration

भीमार्जुनौ पुरॊधाय यदा तौ रणमूर्धनि सथास्येते सिंहविक्रान्ताव अश्विनाव इव दुःसहौ न शेषम इह पश्यामि तदा सैन्यस्य संजय ।। ३-४८-४ ।।

sanskrit

'Endowed with the might of lions and as formidable as the Aswins themselves, when Bhima and Arjuna take to the battlefield, I foresee, O Sanjaya, that my soldiers will be completely annihilated.' ।। 3-48-4 ।।

english translation

bhImArjunau puròdhAya yadA tau raNamUrdhani sathAsyete siMhavikrAntAva azvinAva iva duHsahau na zeSama iha pazyAmi tadA sainyasya saMjaya || 3-48-4 ||

hk transliteration

तौ हय अप्रतिरथौ युद्धे देवपुत्रौ महारथौ दरौपद्यास तं परिक्लेशं न कषंस्येते तव अमर्षिणौ ।। ३-४८-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Those mighty warriors of celestial origin, unmatched in battle, will show no forgiveness, filled with rage at the memory of the insult to Draupadi.' ।। 3-48-5 ।।

english translation

tau haya apratirathau yuddhe devaputrau mahArathau daraupadyAsa taM pariklezaM na kaSaMsyete tava amarSiNau || 3-48-5 ||
