[भगवान] नरस तवं पूर्वदेहे वै नारायण सहायवान बदर्यां तप्तवान उग्रं तपॊ वर्षायुतान बहून ॥ ३-४१-१ ॥

'Mahadeva said, 'In your former life, you were Nara, the companion of Narayana. In Badrikashrama, you engaged in severe ascetic austerities for several thousands of years.'' ॥ 3-41-1 ॥

[bhagavAna] narasa tavaM pUrvadehe vai nArAyaNa sahAyavAna badaryAM taptavAna ugraM tapò varSAyutAna bahUna ॥ 3-41-1 ॥

तवयि वा परमं तेजॊविष्णौ वा पुरुषॊत्तमे युवाभ्यां पुरुषाग्र्याभ्यां तेजसा धार्यते जगत ॥ ३-४१-२ ॥

'In you and in Vishnu—the foremost of beings—resides great might. Together, you uphold the universe.' ॥ 3-41-2 ॥

tavayi vA paramaM tejòviSNau vA puruSòttame yuvAbhyAM puruSAgryAbhyAM tejasA dhAryate jagata ॥ 3-41-2 ॥

शक्राभिषेके सुमहद धनुर जलदनिस्वनम परगृह्य दानवाः शस्तास तवया कृष्णेन च परभॊ ॥ ३-४१-३ ॥

'O lord, seizing that fearsome bow whose twang echoes like the thunder of clouds, you and Krishna vanquished the Danavas during Indra's coronation.' ॥ 3-41-3 ॥

zakrAbhiSeke sumahada dhanura jaladanisvanama paragRhya dAnavAH zastAsa tavayA kRSNena ca parabhò ॥ 3-41-3 ॥

एतत तद एव गाण्डीवं तव पार्थ करॊचितम मायाम आस्थाय यद गरस्तं मया पुरुषसत्तम तूणौ चाप्य अक्षयौ भूयस तव पार्थ यथॊचितौ ॥ ३-४१-४ ॥

'This Gandiva is indeed the bow suited for you, O son of Pritha. O foremost of beings, I took it from you using my powers of illusion. These quivers, perfectly suited for you, will once again be inexhaustible, O son of Pritha!' ॥ 3-41-4 ॥

etata tada eva gANDIvaM tava pArtha karòcitama mAyAma AsthAya yada garastaM mayA puruSasattama tUNau cApya akSayau bhUyasa tava pArtha yathòcitau ॥ 3-41-4 ॥

परीतिमान अस्मि वै पार्थ तव सत्यपराक्रम गृहाण वरम अस्मत्तः काङ्क्षितं यन नरर्षभ ॥ ३-४१-५ ॥

'And, O son of the Kuru lineage, your body will be free from pain and disease. Your prowess is unparalleled and cannot be thwarted. I am pleased with you, O foremost of beings. Ask of me the boon you desire.' ॥ 3-41-5 ॥

parItimAna asmi vai pArtha tava satyaparAkrama gRhANa varama asmattaH kAGkSitaM yana nararSabha ॥ 3-41-5 ॥
