अस्मान अमी धार्तराष्ट्राः कषममाणान अलं सतः अशक्तान एव मन्यन्ते तद्दुःखं नाहवे वधः ॥ ३-३४-१६ ॥

'These Dhritarashtras view us, who are forgiving, as truly inept. This, O king, pains me more than death in battle.' ॥ 3-34-16 ॥

english translation

तत्र चेद युध्यमानानाम अजिह्मम अनिवर्तिनाम सर्वशॊ हि वधः शरेयान परेत्य लॊकाँल लभेमहि ॥ ३-३४-१७ ॥

'If we were to die honorably in combat without fleeing from the enemy, it would be preferable to this exile, for in that case, we would attain realms of bliss in the afterlife.' ॥ 3-34-17 ॥

english translation

अथ वा वयम एवैतान निहत्य भरतर्षभ आददीमहि गां सर्वां तथापि शरेय एव नः ॥ ३-३४-१८ ॥

'Or, O bull of the Bharata race, if we were to slay them all and gain dominion over the entire earth, that would be a prosperity well worth the effort.' ॥ 3-34-18 ॥

english translation

सर्वथा कार्यम एतन नः सवधर्मम अनुतिष्ठताम काङ्क्षतां विपुलां कीर्तिं वैरं परतिचिकीर्षताम ॥ ३-३४-१९ ॥

'We, who always uphold the traditions of our order, who strive for great achievements, and who seek to avenge our wrongs, are bound by this duty.' ॥ 3-34-19 ॥

english translation

आत्मार्थं युध्यमानानां विदिते कृत्यलक्षणे अन्यैर अपहृते राज्ये परशंसैव न गर्हणा ॥ ३-३४-२० ॥

'Even with our kingdom taken from us, if we engage in battle, our actions will earn us fame, not slander, once known to the world.' ॥ 3-34-20 ॥
