Thus addressed, the intelligent Gudakesha, taking up his bow, arrows, and naked sword, set out toward that lake of waters-

hk transliteration by Sanscriptयतः पुरुषशार्दूलौ पानीय हरणे गतु तौ ददर्श हतौ तत्र भरातरौ शवेतवाहनः ॥ ३-२९६-२२ ॥
'And arriving at that place, he whose chariot was drawn by white steeds beheld his two younger brothers, who had come to fetch water, lying dead there—like fierce tigers among men.' ॥ 3-296-22 ॥
english translation
yataH puruSazArdUlau pAnIya haraNe gatu tau dadarza hatau tatra bharAtarau zavetavAhanaH ॥ 3-296-22 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरसुप्ताव इव तौ दृष्ट्वा नरसिंहः सुदुःखितः धनुर उद्यम्य कौन्तेयॊ वयलॊकयत तद वनम ॥ ३-२९६-२३ ॥
'And seeing them lying as if asleep, that lion among men, deeply distressed, raised his bow and began to scan the forest. But in that vast woodland, he found no one else.' ॥ 3-296-23 ॥

parasuptAva iva tau dRSTvA narasiMhaH suduHkhitaH dhanura udyamya kaunteyò vayalòkayata tada vanama ॥ 3-296-23 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनापश्यत तत्र किं चित स भूतं तस्मिन महावने सव्यसाची ततः शरान्तः पानीयं सॊ ऽभयधावत ॥ ३-२९६-२४ ॥
'Wearied but resolute, he who could draw his bow with either hand swiftly hurried toward the water.' ॥ 3-296-24 ॥

nApazyata tatra kiM cita sa bhUtaM tasmina mahAvane savyasAcI tataH zarAntaH pAnIyaM sò 'bhayadhAvata ॥ 3-296-24 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअभिधावंस ततॊ वाचम अन्तरिक्षात स शुश्रुवे किम आसीद असि पानीयं नैतच छक्यं बलात तवया ॥ ३-२९६-२५ ॥
'As he hurried toward the water, a voice from the sky spoke, 'Why dost thou approach this water? Thou shalt not drink it by force.'' ॥ 3-296-25 ॥

abhidhAvaMsa tatò vAcama antarikSAta sa zuzruve kima AsIda asi pAnIyaM naitaca chakyaM balAta tavayA ॥ 3-296-25 ॥
