[य] नापदाम अस्ति मर्यादा न निमित्तं न कारणम धर्मस तु विभजत्य अत्र उभयॊः पुण्यपापयॊः ॥ ३-२९६-१ ॥
'Yudhishthira said: "There is no boundary to misfortunes, nor can their ultimate or immediate cause be clearly known. It is Dharma—the divine Lord of justice—that alone dispenses the fruits of virtue and vice."' ॥ 3-296-1 ॥
english translation
[भीम] परातिकाम्य अनयत कृष्णां सभायां परेष्यवत तदा न मया निहतस तत्र तेन पराप्ताः सम संशयम ॥ ३-२९६-२ ॥
'Thereupon Bhima said: "Surely, this disaster has come upon us because I did not slay the Pratikamin on the spot—when he dragged Krishna into the assembly like a slave."' ॥ 3-296-2 ॥
english translation
[अर्ज] वाचस तीक्ष्णास्थि भेदिन्यः सूतपुत्रेण भाषिताः अतितीक्ष्णा मया कषान्तास तेन पराप्तः सम संशयम ॥ ३-२९६-३ ॥
'And Arjuna said: "Surely, this calamity has come upon us because I did not avenge those cruel words—piercing to the very bone—uttered by the son of the charioteer!"' ॥ 3-296-3 ॥

[सहदेव] शकुनिस तवां यदाजैषीद अक्षद्यूतेन भारत स मया न हतस तत्र तेन पराप्ताः सम संशयम ॥ ३-२९६-४ ॥
'And Sahadeva said, "Surely, O Bharata, this calamity has befallen us because I did not slay Shakuni when he vanquished you at dice!"' ॥ 3-296-4 ॥

[वै] ततॊ युधिष्ठिरॊ राजा नकुलं वाक्यम अब्रवीत आरुह्य वृक्षं माद्रेय निरीक्षस्व दिशॊ दश ॥ ३-२९६-५ ॥
'Vaishampayana continued: "Then King Yudhishthira said to Nakula, ‘O son of Madri, climb this tree and survey the ten directions of the horizon.’"' ॥ 3-296-5 ॥
