तस्यार्घ्यम आसनं चैव गां चावेद्य स धर्मवित किम आगमनम इत्य एवं राजा राजानम अब्रवीत ॥ ३-२७९-६ ॥

'Then, offering him arghya (a respectful gift), a seat, and a cow, the monarch inquired of his royal guest, “What is the purpose of this visit?”' ॥ 3-279-6 ॥

english translation

तस्य सर्वम अभिप्रायम इतिकर्तव्यतां च ताम सत्यवन्तं समुद्दिश्य सर्वम एव नयवेदयत ॥ ३-२७९-७ ॥

'Thus addressed, the king disclosed fully all his intentions and purpose concerning Satyavan.' ॥ 3-279-7 ॥

english translation

[अष्वपति] सावित्री नाम राजर्षे कन्येयं मम शॊभना तां सवधर्मेण धर्मज्ञ सनुषार्थे तवं गृहाण मे ॥ ३-२७९-८ ॥

'And Aswapati said, “O royal sage, this beautiful girl is my daughter, named Savitri. O thou learned in righteousness, in accordance with our customs, please accept her from me as thy daughter-in-law!”' ॥ 3-279-8 ॥

english translation

चयुताः सम राज्याद वनवासम आश्रिताश; चराम धर्मं नियतास तपस्विनः कथं तव अनर्हा वनवासम आश्रमे; सहिष्यते कलेशम इमं सुता तव ॥ ३-२७९-९ ॥

'Hearing these words, Dyumatsena said, “Deprived of our kingdom, we have taken refuge in the forest, leading disciplined lives devoted to virtue as ascetics. But unaccustomed to such exile, how will thy daughter endure this hardship, dwelling in the sylvan retreat?”' ॥ 3-279-9 ॥

english translation

[अष्वपति] सुखं च दुःखं च भवाभवात्मकं; यदा विजानाति सुताहम एव च न मद्विधे युज्यति वाक्यम ईदृशं; विनिश्चयेनाभिगतॊ ऽसमि ते नृप ॥ ३-२७९-१० ॥

'Ashvapati said, "When my daughter and I both understand that happiness and sorrow are fleeting, arising and passing away, such words are unfit for one like me, who has realized this truth."' ॥ 3-279-10 ॥
