यज्वा दानपतिर दक्षः पौरजानपद परियः पाथिवॊ ऽशवपतिर नाम सर्वभूतहिते रतः ॥ ३-२७७-६ ॥
'With his senses mastered and devoted to sacrifice, he was foremost among givers — capable, generous, and dearly loved by both townsfolk and country dwellers alike. And the name of that lord of Earth was Aswapati.' ॥ 3-277-6 ॥

कषमावान अनपत्यश च सत्यवाग विजितेन्द्रियः अतिक्रान्तेन वयसा संतापम उपजग्मिवान ॥ ३-२७७-७ ॥
'Devoted to the welfare of all beings, that forgiving monarch — truthful in speech and master of his senses — remained without an heir. In his advancing years, he was stricken with grief over his childlessness.' ॥ 3-277-7 ॥

अपत्यॊत्पादनार्थं स तीव्रं नियमम आस्थितः काले परिमिताहारॊ बरह्म चारी जितेन्द्रियः ॥ ३-२७७-८ ॥
'Seeking to beget offspring, he took up austere vows, adopted a life of discipline, and practiced strict celibacy. Living on sparse fare, he restrained his senses and embraced the Brahmacharya mode of life.' ॥ 3-277-8 ॥

हुत्वा शतसहस्रं स सावित्र्या राजसत्तम षष्ठे षष्ठे तदा काले बभूव मित भॊजनः ॥ ३-२७७-९ ॥
'That noble king, best among rulers, offered ten thousand oblations to the sacred fire each day, reciting mantras in honor of Savitri, and partook of food sparingly at the sixth hour.' ॥ 3-277-9 ॥

एतेन नियमेनासीद वर्षाण्य अष्टादशैव तु पूर्णे तव अष्टादशे वर्षे सावित्री तुष्टिम अभ्यगात सवरूपिणी तदा राजन दर्शयाम आस तं नृपम ॥ ३-२७७-१० ॥
'For eighteen years he observed those strict vows. And when the eighteenth year was complete, Savitri was pleased with his devotion.' ॥ 3-277-10 ॥
