वसतस तस्य रामस्य ततः शूर्पणखाकृतम खरेणासीन महद वैरं जनस्थाननिवासिना ॥ ३-२६१-४१ ॥

'While living there, Rama was drawn into conflict with Khara, who was then dwelling in Janasthana, due to the machinations of Shurpanakha.' ॥ 3-261-41 ॥

vasatasa tasya rAmasya tataH zUrpaNakhAkRtama khareNAsIna mahada vairaM janasthAnanivAsinA ॥ 3-261-41 ॥

रक्षार्थं तापसानां च राघवॊ धर्मवत्सलः चतुर्दशसहस्राणि जघान भुवि रक्षसाम ॥ ३-२६१-४२ ॥

'To protect the ascetics, the virtuous scion of the Raghu dynasty slew fourteen thousand mighty Rakshasas.' ॥ 3-261-42 ॥

दूषणं च खरं चैव निहत्य सुमहाबलौ चक्रे कषेमं पुनर धीमान धर्मारण्यं सराघवः ॥ ३-२६१-४३ ॥

'Having vanquished Khara, Dushana, and their forces, the wise descendant of Raghu restored peace to the sacred forest.' ॥ 3-261-43 ॥

हतेषु तेषु रक्षः सुततः शूर्पणखा पुनः ययौ निकृत्तनासौष्ठी लङ्कां भरातुर निवेशनम ॥ ३-२६१-४४ ॥

'And after the Rakshasas had been slain, Shurpanakha, with her nose and ears mutilated, went to Lanka—the abode of her brother, Ravana.' ॥ 3-261-44 ॥

'When this grief-stricken Rakshasa woman, with dried blood staining her face, appeared before Ravana, she fell at his feet.' ॥ 3-261-45 ॥
