[य] वरीहिद्रॊणः परित्यक्तः कथं तेन महात्मना कस्मै दत्तश च भगवन विधिना केन चात्थ मे ॥ ३-२४६-१ ॥

'Yudhishthira said, "O noble one, what compelled that high-souled man to give away a drona of corn? To whom did he offer it, and in what manner? I wish to hear the full account from you."' ॥ 3-246-1 ॥

english translation

[ya] varIhidròNaH parityaktaH kathaM tena mahAtmanA kasmai dattaza ca bhagavana vidhinA kena cAttha me ॥ 3-246-1 ॥

परत्यक्षधर्मा भगवान यस्य तुष्टॊ हि कर्मभिः सफलं तस्य जन्माहं मन्ये सद्धर्मचारिणः ॥ ३-२४६-२ ॥

'Surely, I deem the life of that virtuous person to have borne the highest fruit, for the all-seeing Lord, the possessor of the six divine attributes, was well pleased with his conduct.' ॥ 3-246-2 ॥

paratyakSadharmA bhagavAna yasya tuSTò hi karmabhiH saphalaM tasya janmAhaM manye saddharmacAriNaH ॥ 3-246-2 ॥

[वयास] शिलॊञ्छ वृत्तिर धर्मात्मा मुद्गलः संशितव्रतः आसीद राजन कुरुक्षेत्रे सत्यवाग अनसूयकः ॥ ३-२४६-३ ॥

'Vyasa said, "O king, in Kurukshetra, there lived a virtuous sage named Mudgala. He was truthful, free from malice, and had full control over his senses."' ॥ 3-246-3 ॥

[vayAsa] zilòJcha vRttira dharmAtmA mudgalaH saMzitavrataH AsIda rAjana kurukSetre satyavAga anasUyakaH ॥ 3-246-3 ॥

अतिथिव्रती करियावांश च कापॊतीं वृत्तिम आस्थितः सत्रम इष्टी कृतं नाम समुपास्ते महातपाः ॥ ३-२४६-४ ॥

'He sustained himself by following the Śīla and Ūñchha modes of life. Though living as simply as a pigeon, that great ascetic remained devoted to serving guests, faithfully performed the Ishtikrita sacrifice, and observed other sacred rites.' ॥ 3-246-4 ॥

atithivratI kariyAvAMza ca kApòtIM vRttima AsthitaH satrama iSTI kRtaM nAma samupAste mahAtapAH ॥ 3-246-4 ॥

सपुत्रदारॊ हि मुनिः पक्षाहारॊ बभूव सः कपॊत वृत्त्या पक्षेण वरीहि दरॊणम उपार्जयत ॥ ३-२४६-५ ॥

'That sage, along with his wife and son, would sustain themselves for one fortnight on the gathered grains. During the next fortnight, he would live like a pigeon, gathering a drona of corn once again.' ॥ 3-246-5 ॥

saputradArò hi muniH pakSAhArò babhUva saH kapòta vRttyA pakSeNa varIhi daròNama upArjayata ॥ 3-246-5 ॥
