[वै] कर्णस्य वचनं शरुत्वा राजा दुर्यॊधनस तदा हृष्टॊ भूत्वा पुनर दीन इदं वचनम अब्रवीत ॥ ३-२२७-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said, "Having heard Karna's words, King Duryodhana was initially greatly pleased. Soon, however, the prince became melancholic and, addressing the speaker, said:"' ॥ 3-227-1 ॥

बरवीषि यद इदं कर्ण सर्वं मे मनसि सथितम न तव अभ्यनुज्ञां लप्स्यामि गमने यत्र पाण्डवाः ॥ ३-२२७-२ ॥
'What you tell me, O Karna, is ever before my mind. However, I shall not obtain permission to go to the place where the Pandavas are residing.' ॥ 3-227-2 ॥
english translation
परिदेवति तान वीरान धृतराष्ट्रॊ महीपतिः मन्यते ऽभयधिकांश चापि तपॊयॊगेन पाण्डवान ॥ ३-२२७-३ ॥
'King Dhritarashtra is always grieving for those heroes. Indeed, the king regarded the sons of Pandu as having become more powerful than before due to their ascetic austerities.' ॥ 3-227-3 ॥
english translation
अथ वाप्य अनुबुध्येत नृपॊ ऽसमाकं चिकीर्षितम एवम अप्य आयतिं रक्षन नाभ्यनुज्ञातुम अर्हति ॥ ३-२२७-४ ॥
'Or, if the king understands our motives, he will never, considering the future, grant us permission.' ॥ 3-227-4 ॥
english translation
न हि दवैतवने किं चिद विद्यते ऽनयत परयॊजनम उत्सादनम ऋते तेषां वनस्थानां मम दविषाम ॥ ३-२२७-५ ॥
'For, O thou of great effulgence, we have no other purpose in the woods of Dwaitavana than the destruction of the Pandavas in exile!' ॥ 3-227-5 ॥
