[मार्क] अग्नीनां विविधॊ वंशः पीर्तितस ते मयानघ शृणु जन्म तु कौरव्य कार्त्तिकेयस्य धीमतः ॥ ३-२१३-१ ॥

'Markandeya continued, "O sinless scion of Kuru's lineage, I have recounted to you the diverse branches of Agni's lineage. Now, listen as I narrate the tale of the wise and illustrious Kartikeya's birth."' ॥ 3-213-1 ॥

[mArka] agnInAM vividhò vaMzaH pIrtitasa te mayAnagha zRNu janma tu kauravya kArttikeyasya dhImataH ॥ 3-213-1 ॥

अद्भुतस्याद्भुतं पुत्रं परवक्ष्याम्य अमितौजसम जातं सप्तर्षिभार्याभिर बरह्मण्यं कीर्तिवर्धनम ॥ ३-२१३-२ ॥

'I shall recount the tale of that wondrous and illustrious son of the Adbhuta fire, endowed with immense energy, who was born of the wives of the Brahmarshis (the Seven Sages).' ॥ 3-213-2 ॥

adbhutasyAdbhutaM putraM paravakSyAmya amitaujasama jAtaM saptarSibhAryAbhira barahmaNyaM kIrtivardhanama ॥ 3-213-2 ॥

देवासुराः पुरा यत्ता विनिघ्नन्तः परस्परम तत्राजयन सदा देवान दानवा घॊररूपिणः ॥ ३-२१३-३ ॥

'In ancient times, the gods and Asuras were relentlessly engaged in their struggle to annihilate one another, and the fearsome Asuras consistently triumphed over the gods.' ॥ 3-213-3 ॥

devAsurAH purA yattA vinighnantaH parasparama tatrAjayana sadA devAna dAnavA ghòrarUpiNaH ॥ 3-213-3 ॥

वध्यमानं बलं दृष्ट्वा बहुशस तैः पुरंदरः सवसैन्यनायकार्थाय चिन्ताम आप भृशं तदा ॥ ३-२१३-४ ॥

'Purandara (Indra), witnessing the devastating slaughter of his armies at the hands of the Asuras and seeking a leader for the celestial host, began to ponder deeply.' ॥ 3-213-4 ॥

vadhyamAnaM balaM dRSTvA bahuzasa taiH puraMdaraH savasainyanAyakArthAya cintAma Apa bhRzaM tadA ॥ 3-213-4 ॥

देवसेनां दानवैर यॊ भग्नां दृष्ट्वा महाबलः पालयेद वीर्यम आश्रित्य स जञेयः पुरुषॊ मया ॥ ३-२१३-५ ॥

'I must seek a mighty individual who, witnessing the ranks of the celestial army shattered by the Danavas, will possess the strength and resolve to reorganize it with vigor.' ॥ 3-213-5 ॥
