नात्मार्थं पाचयेद अन्नं न वृथा घातयेत पशून न च तत सवयम अश्नीयाद विधिवद यन न निर्वपेत ॥ ३-२-५६ ॥

'One should not cook food solely for oneself, nor should one slaughter an animal without dedicating it to the gods, the ancestors (pitris), and the guests.' ॥ 3-2-56 ॥

english translation

शवभ्यश च शवपचेभ्यश च वयॊभ्यश चावपेद भुवि वैश्वदेवं हि नामैतत सायंप्रातर विधीयते ॥ ३-२-५७ ॥

'One should not consume food that has not been properly dedicated to the gods and ancestors. The Viswadeva sacrifice is performed by scattering food on the earth, both morning and evening.' ॥ 3-2-57 ॥

english translation

विघसाशी भवेत तस्मान नित्यं चामृतभॊजनः विघसं भृत्यशेषं तु यज्ञशेषं तथामृतम ॥ ३-२-५८ ॥

'Therefore, one should be a 'vighasa-ashi' (eater of remnants), And always an 'amrita-bhojana' (partaker of nectar). 'Vighasa' is what remains after feeding dependents, And 'amrita' is what remains after a sacrifice.' ॥ 3-2-58 ॥

english translation

एतां यॊ वर्तते वृत्तिं वर्तमानॊ गृहाश्रमे तस्य धर्मं परं पराहुः कथं वा विप्र मन्यसे ॥ ३-२-५९ ॥

'He who generously provides food to a weary traveler whom he has never seen before gains great merit. Similarly, a person living a domestic life who follows such practices acquires significant religious merit. O Brahmana, what is your opinion on this?' ॥ 3-2-59 ॥

english translation

[ष] अहॊ बत महत कष्टं विपरीतम इदं जगत येनापत्रपते साधुर असाधुस तेन तुष्यति ॥ ३-२-६० ॥

'Saunaka said, "Alas, this world is full of contradictions! What brings shame to the virtuous is often pleasing to the wicked.' ॥ 3-2-60 ॥
