[मार्क] कश चिद दविजातिप्रवरॊ वेदाध्यायी तपॊधनः तपस्वी धर्मशीलश च कौशिकॊ नाम भारत ॥ ३-१९७-१ ॥
'Markandeya said, "There was, O Bharata, a virtuous ascetic named Kaushika, endowed with the wealth of asceticism and devoted to the study of the Vedas."' ॥ 3-197-1 ॥
english translation
साङ्गॊपनिषदान वेदान अधीते दविजसत्तमः स वृक्षमूले कस्मिंश चिद वेदान उच्चारयन सथितः ॥ ३-१९७-२ ॥
'He was a highly distinguished Brahmana, and that best of Brahmanas studied all the Vedas, along with their Angas and Upanishads.' ॥ 3-197-2 ॥
english translation
उपरिष्टाच च वृक्षस्य बलाका संन्यलीयत तया पुरीषम उत्सृष्टं बराह्मणस्य तदॊपरि ॥ ३-१९७-३ ॥
'One day, while he was reciting the Vedas at the foot of a tree, a female crane was perched on the top of that tree.' ॥ 3-197-3 ॥
english translation
ताम अवेक्ष्य ततः करुद्धः समपध्यायत दविजः भृषं करॊधाभिभूतेन बलाका सा निरीक्षिता ॥ ३-१९७-४ ॥
'At that moment, the she-crane happened to befoul the Brahmana’s body. Seeing this, the Brahmana became very angry and thought of harming her.' ॥ 3-197-4 ॥
english translation
अपध्याता च विप्रेण नयपतद वसुधातले बलाकां पतितां दृष्ट्वा गतसत्त्वाम अचेतनाम कारुण्याद अभिसंतप्तः पर्यशॊचत तां दविजः ॥ ३-१९७-५ ॥
'As the Brahmana cast his angry glances upon the crane, he also contemplated injuring her. She fell to the ground, and seeing the crane thus fallen from the tree, insensible in death, the Brahmana was deeply moved by pity.' ॥ 3-197-5 ॥
