ये च करूरेषु सर्वेषु वर्तमाना जुगुप्सिताः सवकर्म कुर्वन्ति सदा दुष्करं तच च मे मतम ।। ३-१९६-११ ।।

sanskrit

'Similarly, those who, though perpetually engaged in acts of cruelty and incurring widespread hatred, still succeed in fulfilling their duties, accomplish what, in my view, is exceedingly difficult.' ।। 3-196-11 ।।

english translation

ye ca karUreSu sarveSu vartamAnA jugupsitAH savakarma kurvanti sadA duSkaraM taca ca me matama || 3-196-11 ||

'O regenerate sage, please enlighten me on the truths regarding the duties of the Kshatriya order. It is difficult, O twice-born one, for those high-souled individuals to acquire virtue who, by the duties of their order, are compelled to perform actions that are cruel.' ।। 3-196-12 ।।

kaSatradharmasamAcAraM tathyaM cAkhyAhi me davija dharmaH sudurlabhò vipra nRzaMsena durAtmanA || 3-196-12 ||

'O holy one, you are capable of answering all questions; I long to hear you discourse on all of this. O foremost of Bhrigu's race, I am eager to listen to your words, waiting upon you with utmost respect, O you of excellent vows!' ।। 3-196-13 ।।

'Markandeya said, "O foremost of the Bharata race, I will indeed explain all of this to you, truly and thoroughly, no matter how difficult your question may be. Therefore, listen attentively as I speak to you."' ।। 3-196-14 ।।

'Some regard the mother as superior, and some the father. However, it is the mother who brings forth and raises the offspring, and this, in my opinion, is far more difficult.' ।। 3-196-15 ।।

mAtaraM sadRzIM tAta pitRRna anye ca manyate kuSkaraM kurute mAtA vivardhayati yA parajAH || 3-196-15 ||
