तपसा देवतेज्याभिर वन्दनेन तितिक्षया अभिचारैर उपायैश च ईहन्ते पितरः सुतान ।। ३-१९६-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'Fathers, too, by means of ascetic penances, by worship of the gods, by adorations directed towards them, by enduring cold and heat, by incantations and other means, desire to have children.' ।। 3-196-16 ।।

english translation

tapasA devatejyAbhira vandanena titikSayA abhicAraira upAyaiza ca Ihante pitaraH sutAna || 3-196-16 ||

'And having, through these painful means, obtained children who are so difficult to acquire, they, O hero, are always anxious about the future of their sons.' ।। 3-196-17 ।।

evaM kRcchreNa mahatA putraM parApya sudurlabhama cintayanti sadA vIra dIdRzò 'yaM bhaviSyati || 3-196-17 ||

'O Bharata, both the father and the mother desire to see in their sons fame, achievements, prosperity, descendants, and virtue.' ।। 3-196-18 ।।

AzaMsate ca putreSu pitA mAtA ca bhArata yazò kIrtima athaizvaryaM parajA dharmaM tathaiva ca || 3-196-18 ||

तयॊर आशां तु सफलां यः करॊति स धर्मवित पिता माता च राजेन्द्र तुष्यतॊ यस्य नित्यदा इह परेत्य च तस्याथ कीर्तिर धर्मश च शाश्वतः ।। ३-१९६-१९ ।।

sanskrit

'That son is virtuous who fulfills the hopes of his parents. And, O great king, that son with whom both the father and the mother are pleased, achieves eternal fame and eternal virtue, both in this world and the next.' ।। 3-196-19 ।।

tayòra AzAM tu saphalAM yaH karòti sa dharmavita pitA mAtA ca rAjendra tuSyatò yasya nityadA iha paretya ca tasyAtha kIrtira dharmaza ca zAzvataH || 3-196-19 ||

'As for women, neither sacrifices, nor sraddhas, nor fasts are of any efficacy. It is only by serving their husbands that they can attain heaven.' ।। 3-196-20 ।।
