तपसा देवतेज्याभिर वन्दनेन तितिक्षया अभिचारैर उपायैश च ईहन्ते पितरः सुतान ॥ ३-१९६-१६ ॥

sanskrit

'Fathers, too, by means of ascetic penances, by worship of the gods, by adorations directed towards them, by enduring cold and heat, by incantations and other means, desire to have children.' ॥ 3-196-16 ॥

tapasA devatejyAbhira vandanena titikSayA abhicAraira upAyaiza ca Ihante pitaraH sutAna ॥ 3-196-16 ॥

'That son is virtuous who fulfills the hopes of his parents. And, O great king, that son with whom both the father and the mother are pleased, achieves eternal fame and eternal virtue, both in this world and the next.' ॥ 3-196-19 ॥

tayòra AzAM tu saphalAM yaH karòti sa dharmavita pitA mAtA ca rAjendra tuSyatò yasya nityadA iha paretya ca tasyAtha kIrtira dharmaza ca zAzvataH ॥ 3-196-19 ॥

'As for women, neither sacrifices, nor sraddhas, nor fasts are of any efficacy. It is only by serving their husbands that they can attain heaven.' ॥ 3-196-20 ॥
