[वै] ततॊ युधिष्ठिरॊ राजा मार्कण्डेयं महाद्युतिम पप्रच्छ भरतश्रेष्ठ धर्मप्रश्नं सुदुर्वचम ॥ ३-१९६-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana said, "O foremost of the Bharata race, King Yudhishthira then approached the illustrious Markandeya and posed a challenging question on morality, seeking his wisdom."' ॥ 3-196-1 ॥

english translation

शरॊतुम इच्छामि भगवन सत्रीणां माहात्म्यम उत्तमम कथ्यमानं तवया विप्र सूक्ष्मं धर्मं च तत्त्वतः ॥ ३-१९६-२ ॥

'I wish to hear, O holy one, about the exalted and noble virtues of women. I seek, O Brahmana, your discourse on the subtle and profound truths of morality.' ॥ 3-196-2 ॥

english translation

परत्यक्षेण हि विप्रर्षौ देवा दृश्यन्ति सत्तम सूर्यचन्द्रमसौ वायुः पृथिवी बह्निर एव च ॥ ३-१९६-३ ॥

'O revered sage, O best of men, the Sun, the Moon, the Wind, the Earth, Fire, the father, the mother, and the preceptor—these and other sacred entities ordained by the gods manifest to us as embodied divinities.' ॥ 3-196-3 ॥

english translation

पिता माता च भगवन गाव एव च सत्तम यच चान्यद एव विहितं तच चापि भृगुनन्दन ॥ ३-१९६-४ ॥

'O Bhrgu's descendant (Bhrigunandana), father, mother, God, the village itself, and whatever else is prescribed/ordained .' ॥ 3-196-4 ॥

english translation

मन्ये ऽहं गुरुवत सर्वम एकपत्न्यस तथा सत्रियः पतिव्रतानां शुश्रूषा दुष्करा परतिभाति मे ॥ ३-१९६-५ ॥

'All these venerable ones deserve our highest reverence. Equally deserving of honor is the woman who remains devoted to a single lord. The devotion and service that chaste wives offer to their husbands seem to me to be exceedingly arduous and worthy of great reverence.' ॥ 3-196-5 ॥
