[वै] मार्कण्डेयम ऋषयः पाण्डवाश च पर्यपृच्छन अस्ति कश चिद भवतश चिरजाततरेति ॥ ३-१९१-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said, "The sages, the Brahmanas, and Yudhishthira, all inquired of Markandeya, asking, 'How did the Rishi Vaka attain such extraordinary longevity?'"' ॥ 3-191-1 ॥
english translation
स तान उवाच अस्ति खलु राजर्षिर इन्द्रद्युम्नॊ नाम कषीणपुण्यस तरिदिवात परच्युतः कीर्तिस ते वयुच्छिन्नेति स माम उपातिष्ठत अथ परत्यभिजानाति मां भवान इति ॥ ३-१९१-२ ॥
'Sūta said: There was indeed a royal sage named Indradyumna, who, having exhausted his merits, fell from the third heaven (paradise). [He spoke:] 'Your fame is unbroken.' He approached me [and asked], 'Do you recognize me?'' ॥ 3-191-2 ॥
english translation
तम अहम अब्रुवम न वयं रासायनिकाः शरीरॊपतापेनात्मनः समारभामहे ऽरथानाम अनुष्ठानम ॥ ३-१९१-३ ॥
'I said to him: We are not alchemists/physicians who begin the performance of purposes through bodily suffering/mortification of our bodies.' ॥ 3-191-3 ॥
english translation
अस्ति खलु हिमवति पराकारकर्णॊ नामॊलूकः स भवन्तं यदि जानीयात परकृष्टे चाध्वनि हिमवान तत्रासौ परतिवसतीति ॥ ३-१९१-४ ॥
'Indeed, there is an owl named Parakarna who resides in the Himalayas. If he were to recognize you, he would tell you that he dwells in the exalted path of the snowy mountains.' ॥ 3-191-4 ॥
english translation
स माम अश्वॊ भूत्वा तत्रावहद यत्र बभूवॊलूकः ॥ ३-१९१-५ ॥
'He (the owl) became a horse and took me there, to the place where the owl had once been.' ॥ 3-191-5 ॥
