[मार्क] भूय एव तु माहात्म्यं बराह्मणानां निबॊध मे वैन्यॊ नामेह राजर्षिर अश्वमेधाय दीक्षितः तम अत्रिर गन्तुम आरेभे वित्तार्थम इति नः शरुतम ।। ३-१८३-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Markandeya continued, 'Listen once again as I recount the glory of the Brahmanas. It is said that a royal sage named Vainya was once engaged in performing the Ashvamedha (horse sacrifice). The sage Atri initially intended to approach him for alms.'' ।। 3-183-1 ।।

english translation

[mArka] bhUya eva tu mAhAtmyaM barAhmaNAnAM nibòdha me vainyò nAmeha rAjarSira azvamedhAya dIkSitaH tama atrira gantuma Arebhe vittArthama iti naH zarutama || 3-183-1 ||

hk transliteration

भूयॊ ऽथ नानुरुध्यत स धर्मव्यक्ति निदर्शनात संचिन्त्य स महातेजा वनम एवान्वरॊचयत धर्मपत्नीं समाहूय पुत्रांश चेदम उवाच ह ।। ३-१८३-२ ।।

sanskrit

'Then, reflecting deeply on the path of righteousness and recognizing the example it set, the mighty sage no longer pursued his desire. After much contemplation, the illustrious sage, endowed with great power, resolved to dwell in the forest. Summoning his wife and sons, he addressed them with solemnity.' ।। 3-183-2 ।।

english translation

bhUyò 'tha nAnurudhyata sa dharmavyakti nidarzanAta saMcintya sa mahAtejA vanama evAnvaròcayata dharmapatnIM samAhUya putrAMza cedama uvAca ha || 3-183-2 ||

hk transliteration

पराप्स्यामः फलम अत्यन्तं बहुलं निरुपद्रवम अरण्यगमनं कषिप्रं रॊचतां वॊ गुनाधिकम ।। ३-१८३-३ ।।

sanskrit

'Let us achieve the serene and complete fulfillment of our desires. Therefore, may the idea of quickly retreating to the forest for a life of great virtue be agreeable to you all.' ।। 3-183-3 ।।

english translation

parApsyAmaH phalama atyantaM bahulaM nirupadravama araNyagamanaM kaSipraM ròcatAM vò gunAdhikama || 3-183-3 ||

hk transliteration

तं भार्या परत्युवाचेदं धर्मम एवानुरुध्यती वैनं गत्वा महात्मानम अर्थयस्व धनं बहु स ते दास्यति राजर्षिर यजमानॊ ऽरथिने धनम ।। ३-१८३-४ ।।

sanskrit

'His wife, motivated by virtue, then said to him, 'Go to the illustrious prince Vainya and request abundant wealth from him. That royal sage, engaged in his sacrifice, will surely grant your wish.'' ।। 3-183-4 ।।

english translation

taM bhAryA paratyuvAcedaM dharmama evAnurudhyatI vainaM gatvA mahAtmAnama arthayasva dhanaM bahu sa te dAsyati rAjarSira yajamAnò 'rathine dhanama || 3-183-4 ||

hk transliteration

तत आदाय विप्रर्षे परतिगृह्य धनं बहु भृत्यान सुतान संविभज्य ततॊ वरज यथेप्सितम एष वै परमॊ धर्मधर्मविद्भिर उदाहृतः ।। ३-१८३-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Once you have obtained the wealth, you can distribute it among your sons and attendants before retiring wherever you desire. This, indeed, is considered the higher path of virtue, as upheld by those well-versed in righteousness.' ।। 3-183-5 ।।

english translation

tata AdAya viprarSe paratigRhya dhanaM bahu bhRtyAna sutAna saMvibhajya tatò varaja yathepsitama eSa vai paramò dharmadharmavidbhira udAhRtaH || 3-183-5 ||
