[य] भवान एतादृशॊ लॊके वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः बरूहि किं कुर्वतः कर्म भवेद गतिर अनुत्तमा ॥ ३-१७८-१ ॥
'Yudhishthira said, "In this world, you are well-versed in the Vedas and Vedangas; tell me, then, what one should do to attain salvation?"' ॥ 3-178-1 ॥
english translation
[सर्प] पात्रे दत्त्वा परियाण्य उक्त्वा सत्यम उक्त्वा च भारत अहिंसा निरतः सवर्गं गच्छेद इति मतिर मम ॥ ३-१७८-२ ॥
'The serpent replied, "O scion of the Bharata race, my belief is that one who gives alms to the deserving, speaks kindly, tells the truth, and harms no creature, attains heaven."' ॥ 3-178-2 ॥
english translation
[य] दानाद वा सर्पसत्याद वा किम अतॊ गुरु दृश्यते अहिंसा परिययॊश चैव गुरुलाघवम उच्यताम ॥ ३-१७८-३ ॥
'Yudhishthira asked, "Which, O serpent, is superior—truth or almsgiving? Tell me also, which is of greater or lesser importance: kind behavior and the avoidance of harming any creature?"' ॥ 3-178-3 ॥
english translation
[सर्प] दाने रतत्वं सत्यं च अहिंसा परियम एव च एषां कार्यगरीयस्त्वाद दृश्यते गुरुलाघवम ॥ ३-१७८-४ ॥
'The serpent replied, "The relative merits of these virtues—truth and charity, kind speech and abstention from harm—are determined by their inherent value."' ॥ 3-178-4 ॥
english translation
कस्माच चिद दानयॊगाद धि सत्यम एव विशिष्यते सत्यवाक्याच च राजेन्द्र किं चिद दानं विशिष्यते ॥ ३-१७८-५ ॥
'Among all forms of charity, truth alone stands supreme. And, O king, among all charitable acts, the spoken word of truth is the highest.' ॥ 3-178-5 ॥
