[य] सत्यं दानं कषमा शीलम आनृशंस्यं दमॊ घृणा दृश्यन्ते यत्र नागेन्द्र स बराह्मण इति समृतः ॥ ३-१७७-१६ ॥

'Yudhishthira said, "O foremost of serpents, it is said by the wise that he who embodies truth, charity, forgiveness, good conduct, benevolence, adherence to his duties, and mercy is truly a Brahmana."' ॥ 3-177-16 ॥

english translation

[ya] satyaM dAnaM kaSamA zIlama AnRzaMsyaM damò ghRNA dRzyante yatra nAgendra sa barAhmaNa iti samRtaH ॥ 3-177-16 ॥

वेद्यं सर्पपरं बरह्म निर्दुःखम असुखं च यत यत्र गत्वा न शॊचन्ति भवतः किं विवक्षितम ॥ ३-१७७-१७ ॥

'And, O serpent, that which should be known is the supreme Brahman, in which neither happiness nor misery exists; by attaining which, beings are freed from sorrow. What is your opinion?' ॥ 3-177-17 ॥

english translation

vedyaM sarpaparaM barahma nirduHkhama asukhaM ca yata yatra gatvA na zòcanti bhavataH kiM vivakSitama ॥ 3-177-17 ॥

[सर्प] चातुर्वर्ण्यं परमाणं च सत्यं च बरह्म चैव ह शूद्रेष्व अपि च सत्यं च दानम अक्रॊध एव च आनृशंस्यम अहिंसा च घृणा चैव युधिष्ठिर ॥ ३-१७७-१८ ॥

'O Yudhishthira, truth, charity, forgiveness, benevolence, kindness, and the Vedas, which uphold the welfare of the four orders and serve as the authority in matters of religion, are found even in the Sudra.' ॥ 3-177-18 ॥

english translation

[sarpa] cAturvarNyaM paramANaM ca satyaM ca barahma caiva ha zUdreSva api ca satyaM ca dAnama akròdha eva ca AnRzaMsyama ahiMsA ca ghRNA caiva yudhiSThira ॥ 3-177-18 ॥

वेद्यं यच चाथ निर्दुःखम असुखं च नराधिप ताभ्यां हीनं पदं चान्यन न तद अस्तीति लक्षये ॥ ३-१७७-१९ ॥

'As for the object you speak of, which is said to be free from both happiness and misery, I do not perceive anything that is truly devoid of these.' ॥ 3-177-19 ॥

vedyaM yaca cAtha nirduHkhama asukhaM ca narAdhipa tAbhyAM hInaM padaM cAnyana na tada astIti lakSaye ॥ 3-177-19 ॥

[य] शूद्रे चैतद भवेल लक्ष्यं दविजे तच च न विद्यते न वै शूद्रॊ भवेच छूद्रॊ बराह्मणॊ न च बराह्मणः ॥ ३-१७७-२० ॥

'Yudhishthira said, "The qualities found in a Sudra do not exist in a Brahmana, nor do those of a Brahmana exist in a Sudra."' ॥ 3-177-20 ॥
