[जनम] कथं नागायुतप्राणॊ भीमसेनॊ महाबलः भयम आहारयत तीव्रं तस्माद अजगरान मुने ।। ३-१७५-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Janamejaya said, "O sage, how is it that Bhima, endowed with mighty prowess and the strength of ten thousand elephants, was overcome with fear at the sight of that serpent?"' ।। 3-175-1 ।।

english translation

[janama] kathaM nAgAyutaprANò bhImasenò mahAbalaH bhayama AhArayata tIvraM tasmAda ajagarAna mune || 3-175-1 ||

hk transliteration

पौलस्त्य यॊ ऽऽहवयद युद्धे धनदं बलदर्पितः नलिन्यां कदनं कृत्वा वराणां यक्षरक्षसाम ।। ३-१७५-२ ।।

sanskrit

'You have described him, that vanquisher of foes, as stricken with fear and dismay—he who, by his valor at the lotus lake of Kuvera, became the destroyer of Yakshas and Rakshasas.' ।। 3-175-2 ।।

english translation

paulastya yò ''havayada yuddhe dhanadaM baladarpitaH nalinyAM kadanaM kRtvA varANAM yakSarakSasAma || 3-175-2 ||

hk transliteration

तं शंससि भयाविष्टम आपन्नम अरिकर्षणम एतद इच्छाम्य अहं शरॊतुं परं कौतूहलं हि मे ।। ३-१७५-३ ।।

sanskrit

'You speak of him, the subduer of enemies, as overwhelmed with fear, he who once, in proud defiance, challenged Pulastya's son, the dispenser of all riches, to single combat. I eagerly wish to hear more, for my curiosity is boundless.' ।। 3-175-3 ।।

english translation

taM zaMsasi bhayAviSTama Apannama arikarSaNama etada icchAmya ahaM zaròtuM paraM kautUhalaM hi me || 3-175-3 ||

hk transliteration

[वै] बह्वाश्चर्ये वने तेषां वसताम उग्रधन्विनाम पराप्तानाम आश्रमाद राजन राजर्षेर वृषपर्वणः ।। ३-१७५-४ ।।

sanskrit

'While these mighty archers were dwelling in that greatly wondrous forest, they arrived at the hermitage of the royal sage (rājarṣi) Vṛṣaparvan.' ।। 3-175-4 ।।

english translation

[vai] bahvAzcarye vane teSAM vasatAma ugradhanvinAma parAptAnAma AzramAda rAjana rAjarSera vRSaparvaNaH || 3-175-4 ||

hk transliteration

यदृच्छया धनुः पानिर बद्धखड्गॊ वृकॊदरः ददर्श तद वनं रम्यदेवगन्धर्वसेवितम ।। ३-१७५-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Vṛkodara, armed with his bow and scimitar, wandered freely at his pleasure. During his explorations, he came upon a magnificent forest, graced by the presence of gods and Gandharvas.' ।। 3-175-5 ।।

english translation

yadRcchayA dhanuH pAnira baddhakhaDgò vRkòdaraH dadarza tada vanaM ramyadevagandharvasevitama || 3-175-5 ||
