उदपानाः कुरुश्रेष्ठ तथैवाप्य अम्बरीषकाः समन्तात कॊशमात्रं च कारिता विषमा च भूः ॥ ३-१६-१६ ॥
'The land surrounding the city for two miles was made uneven with dug pits and concealed combustibles.' ॥ 3-16-16 ॥

परकृत्या विषमं दुर्गं परकृत्या च सुरक्षितम परकृत्या चायुधॊपेतं विशेषेण तदानघ ॥ ३-१६-१७ ॥
'Our fort, O sinless one, is naturally strong, always well-defended, and equipped with a variety of weapons.' ॥ 3-16-17 ॥

सुरक्षितं सुगुप्तं च सरायुध समन्वितम तत पुरं भरतश्रेष्ठ यथेन्द्र भवनं तथा ॥ ३-१६-१८ ॥
'Thanks to these preparations, our city was more fortified than ever to face any foe. O chief of the Bharatas, under these conditions, the city resembled the abode of Indra himself.' ॥ 3-16-18 ॥

न चामुद्रॊ ऽभिनिर्याति न चामुद्रः परवेश्यते वृष्ण्यन्धकपुरे राजंस तदा सौभसमागमे ॥ ३-१६-१९ ॥
'When Shalva approached, no one could enter or leave the city of the Vrishnis and Andhakas without the agreed-upon sign.' ॥ 3-16-19 ॥

अनु रथ्यासु सर्वासु चत्वरेषु च कौरव बलं बभूव राजेन्द्र परभूतगजवाजिमत ॥ ३-१६-२० ॥
