[जनम] पाण्डॊः पुत्रा महात्मानः सर्वे दिव्यपराक्रमाः कियन्तं कालम अवसन पर्वते गन्धमादने ॥ ३-१५७-१ ॥

'Janamejaya inquired, "For how long did my revered ancestors, the high-souled sons of Pandu, unmatched in prowess, dwell on the Gandhamadana mountain?"' ॥ 3-157-1 ॥

english translation

[janama] pANDòH putrA mahAtmAnaH sarve divyaparAkramAH kiyantaM kAlama avasana parvate gandhamAdane ॥ 3-157-1 ॥

कानि चाभ्यवहार्याणि तत्र तेषां महात्मनाम वसतां लॊकवीराणाम आसंस तद बरूहि सत्तम ॥ ३-१५७-२ ॥

'And what did those mighty and valiant heroes do? What was the sustenance of those high-souled ones, when the champions of the world resided there? O illustrious one, kindly narrate all these details.' ॥ 3-157-2 ॥

kAni cAbhyavahAryANi tatra teSAM mahAtmanAma vasatAM lòkavIrANAma AsaMsa tada barUhi sattama ॥ 3-157-2 ॥

विस्तरेण च मे शंस भीमसेन पराक्रमम यद यच चक्रे महाबाहुस तस्मिन हैमवते गिरौ न खल्व आसीत पुनर युद्धं तस्य यक्षैर दविजॊत्तम ॥ ३-१५७-३ ॥

'Do thou describe the valor of Bhimasena and the deeds of that mighty-armed hero on the Himalayan mountain. Surely, O best of Brahmanas, he did not engage in battle again with the Yakshas.' ॥ 3-157-3 ॥

vistareNa ca me zaMsa bhImasena parAkramama yada yaca cakre mahAbAhusa tasmina haimavate girau na khalva AsIta punara yuddhaM tasya yakSaira davijòttama ॥ 3-157-3 ॥

कच चित समागमस तेषाम आसीद वैश्रवणेन च तत्र हय आयाति धनद आर्ष्टिषेणॊ यथाब्रवीत ॥ ३-१५७-४ ॥

'Did they meet Vaisravana? Truly, as Arshtishena had said, the lord of wealth came there.' ॥ 3-157-4 ॥

kaca cita samAgamasa teSAma AsIda vaizravaNena ca tatra haya AyAti dhanada ArSTiSeNò yathAbravIta ॥ 3-157-4 ॥

एतद इच्छाम्य अहं शरॊतुं विस्तरेण तपॊधन न हि मे शृण्वतस तृप्तिर अस्ति तेषां विचेष्टितम ॥ ३-१५७-५ ॥

'O one of great austerity, I long to hear all the details. I feel I have not yet been fully satisfied by the account of their deeds.' ॥ 3-157-5 ॥

etada icchAmya ahaM zaròtuM vistareNa tapòdhana na hi me zRNvatasa tRptira asti teSAM viceSTitama ॥ 3-157-5 ॥
