[ज] यद इदं शॊचितं राज्ञा धृतराष्ट्रेण वै मुने परव्राज्य पाण्डवान वीरान सर्वम एतन निरर्थकम ॥ ३-४७-१ ॥

'Janamejaya said, "After sending the heroic sons of Pandu into exile, the lamentations of Dhritarashtra, O Muni, are entirely futile."' ॥ 3-47-1 ॥

[ja] yada idaM zòcitaM rAjJA dhRtarASTreNa vai mune paravrAjya pANDavAna vIrAna sarvama etana nirarthakama ॥ 3-47-1 ॥

कथं हि राजा पुत्रं सवम उपेक्षेताल्प चेतसम दुर्यॊधनं पाण्डुपुत्रान कॊपयानं महारथान ॥ ३-४७-२ ॥

'Why did the king allow his foolish son Duryodhana to provoke those mighty warriors, the sons of Pandu?' ॥ 3-47-2 ॥

kathaM hi rAjA putraM savama upekSetAlpa cetasama duryòdhanaM pANDuputrAna kòpayAnaM mahArathAna ॥ 3-47-2 ॥

किम आसीत पाण्डुपुत्राणां वने भॊजनम उच्यताम वानेयम अथ वा कृष्टम एतद आख्यातु मे भवान ॥ ३-४७-३ ॥

'Now tell us, O Brahmana, what food did the sons of Pandu eat while living in the forest? Was it foraged from the wilderness, or was it cultivated produce?' ॥ 3-47-3 ॥

kima AsIta pANDuputrANAM vane bhòjanama ucyatAma vAneyama atha vA kRSTama etada AkhyAtu me bhavAna ॥ 3-47-3 ॥

[वै] वानेयं च मृगांश चैव शुद्धैर बाणैर निपातितान बराह्मणानां निवेद्याग्रम अभुञ्जन पुरुषर्षभाः ॥ ३-४७-४ ॥

'Vaisampayana said, "Those bulls among men gathered the fruits of the wilderness and hunted deer with pure arrows. They first dedicated a portion of their food to the Brahmanas and consumed the rest themselves."' ॥ 3-47-4 ॥

[vai] vAneyaM ca mRgAMza caiva zuddhaira bANaira nipAtitAna barAhmaNAnAM nivedyAgrama abhuJjana puruSarSabhAH ॥ 3-47-4 ॥

तांस तु शूरान महेष्वासांस तदा निवसतॊ वने अन्वयुर बराह्मणा राजन साग्नयॊ ऽनङ्गयस तथा ॥ ३-४७-५ ॥

'For, O King, while those heroic archers lived in the woods, they were accompanied by Brahmanas of both kinds: those who worship with fire and those who do not.' ॥ 3-47-5 ॥

tAMsa tu zUrAna maheSvAsAMsa tadA nivasatò vane anvayura barAhmaNA rAjana sAgnayò 'naGgayasa tathA ॥ 3-47-5 ॥
