[मार्क] अजॊ नामाभवद राजा महान इक्ष्वाकुवंशजः तस्य पुत्रॊ दशरथः शश्वत सवाध्यायवाञ शुचिः ॥ ३-२५८-६ ॥

'Markandeya said, "Listen, O prince of the Bharata race, to this ancient tale as it truly unfolded! I will recount to you the hardships endured by Rama along with his wife. There was a mighty king named Aja, born into the noble lineage of Ikshvaku."' ॥ 3-258-6 ॥

[mArka] ajò nAmAbhavada rAjA mahAna ikSvAkuvaMzajaH tasya putrò dazarathaH zazvata savAdhyAyavAJa zuciH ॥ 3-258-6 ॥

अभवंस तस्य चत्वारः पुत्रा धर्मार्थकॊविदाः रामलक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्ना भरतश च महाबलः ॥ ३-२५८-७ ॥

'He had a son named Dasaratha, devoted to the study of the Vedas and ever pure. And Dasaratha had four sons, well-versed in morality and the principles of life, named Rama, Lakshmana, Shatrughna, and the mighty Bharata.' ॥ 3-258-7 ॥

abhavaMsa tasya catvAraH putrA dharmArthakòvidAH rAmalakSmaNazatrughnA bharataza ca mahAbalaH ॥ 3-258-7 ॥

रामस्य माता कौसल्या कैकेयी भरतस्य तु सुतौ लक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्नौ सुमित्रायाः परंतपौ ॥ ३-२५८-८ ॥

'Rama's mother was Kausalya, and Bharata's mother was Kaikeyi, while the mighty Lakshmana and Shatrughna, the destroyers of their enemies, were the sons of Sumitra.' ॥ 3-258-8 ॥

rAmasya mAtA kausalyA kaikeyI bharatasya tu sutau lakSmaNazatrughnau sumitrAyAH paraMtapau ॥ 3-258-8 ॥

विदेहराजॊ जनकः सीता तस्यात्मजा बिभॊ यां चकार सवयं तवष्टा रामस्य महिषीं परियाम ॥ ३-२५८-९ ॥

'And Janaka was the king of Videha, and Sita was his daughter. Tvashta, the divine artisan, created her, intending that she should be the beloved wife of Rama.' ॥ 3-258-9 ॥

videharAjò janakaH sItA tasyAtmajA bibhò yAM cakAra savayaM tavaSTA rAmasya mahiSIM pariyAma ॥ 3-258-9 ॥

'I have now narrated the history of both Rama's and Sita's birth. And now, O king, I will recount the birth of Ravana to you.' ॥ 3-258-10 ॥
