[मार्क] पराप्तम अप्रतिमं दुःखं रामेण भरतर्षभ रक्षसा जानकी तस्य हृता भार्या बलीयसा ॥ ३-२५८-१ ॥
'Markandeya said, "O bull of the Bharata race, even Rama, the great, endured unparalleled misery when the evil-minded Ravana, king of the Rakshasas, his wife abducted Sita."' ॥ 3-258-1 ॥
english translation
आश्रमाद राक्षसेन्द्रेण रावणेन विहायसा मायाम आस्थाय तरसा हत्वा गृध्रं जटायुषम ॥ ३-२५८-२ ॥
'Using deceit and overpowering the vulture Jatayu, Ravana forcibly abducted his wife Sita from their forest hermitage.' ॥ 3-258-2 ॥
english translation
परत्याजहार तां रामः सुग्रीव बलम आश्रितः बद्ध्वा सेतुं समुद्रस्य दग्ध्वा लङ्कां शितैः शरैः ॥ ३-२५८-३ ॥
'However, Rama, with the aid of Sugriva, retrieved her, building a bridge across the sea and destroying Lanka with his sharp-edged arrows.' ॥ 3-258-3 ॥
english translation
[य] कस्मिन रामः कुले जातः किंवीर्यः किंपराक्रमः रावणः कस्य वा पुत्रः किं वैरं तस्य तेन ह ॥ ३-२५८-४ ॥
'Yudhishthira said, 'In what race was Rama born, and what was the extent of his might and prowess? Whose son was Ravana, and what cause led to his conflict with Rama?'' ॥ 3-258-4 ॥
english translation
एतन मे भगवन सर्वं सम्यग आख्यातुम अर्हसि शरॊतुम इच्छामि चरितं रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ॥ ३-२५८-५ ॥
'It is befitting of you, O illustrious one, to tell me all this in detail; for I am eager to hear the tale of Rama, the one of great deeds!' ॥ 3-258-5 ॥
