[मार्क] एवम उक्तः स विप्रस तु धर्मव्याधेन भारत कथाम अकथयद भूयॊ मनसः परीतिवर्धनीम ॥ ३-२०२-१ ॥
'Markandeya continued, "O Bharata, the Brahmana, thus questioned by the virtuous fowler, resumed his discourse, which was so pleasing to the mind."' ॥ 3-202-1 ॥
english translation
[बरा] महाभूतानि यान्य आहुः पञ्च धर्मविदां वर एकैकस्य गुणान सम्यक पञ्चानाम अपि मे वद ॥ ३-२०२-२ ॥
'The Brahmana said, "O best of the followers of religion, it is said that there are five great elements. Please describe to me in detail the properties of any one of these five."' ॥ 3-202-2 ॥
english translation
[वयध] भूमिर आपस तथा जयॊतिर वायुर आकाशम एव च गुणॊत्तराणि सर्वाणि तेषां वक्ष्यामि ते गुणान ॥ ३-२०२-३ ॥
'The fowler replied, "The earth, water, fire, air, and sky each have properties that overlap with one another. I shall describe them to you."' ॥ 3-202-3 ॥

भूमिः पञ्च गुणा बरह्मन्न उदकं च चतुर्गुणम गुणास तरयस तेजसि च तरयश चाकाशवातयॊः ॥ ३-२०२-४ ॥
'The earth, O Brahmana, has five qualities; water has four; fire has three, and air and sky each have three as well.' ॥ 3-202-4 ॥

शब्दः सपर्शश च रूपं च रसश चापि दविजॊत्तम एते गुणाः पञ्च भूमेः सर्वेभ्यॊ गुणवत्तराः ॥ ३-२०२-५ ॥
'O best of the Brahmanas, sound, touch, form, and taste are the five qualities of earth, and these qualities are superior to all others.' ॥ 3-202-5 ॥
