[वै] ततः स पाण्डवॊ भूयॊ मार्कण्डेयम उवाच ह कथयस्वेह चरितं मनॊर वैवस्वतस्य मे ॥ ३-१८५-१ ॥
'Then Yudhishthira, the son of Pandu, said to the Brahmana Markandeya, "O sage, please narrate to me the history of Vaivaswata Manu."' ॥ 3-185-1 ॥
english translation
[मार्क] विवस्तवः सुतॊ राजन परमर्षिः परतापवान बभूव नरशार्दूल परजापतिसमद्युतिः ॥ ३-१८५-२ ॥
'Markandeya replied, "O king, O foremost of men, there was a mighty and exalted Rishi named Manu. He was the son of Vivaswan and shone with a radiance equal to that of Brahma."' ॥ 3-185-2 ॥
english translation
ओजसा तेजसा लक्ष्म्या तपसा च विशेषतः अतिचक्राम पितरं मनुः सवं च पितामहम ॥ ३-१८५-३ ॥
'He surpassed both his father and grandfather in strength, power, fortune, and religious austerities.' ॥ 3-185-3 ॥
english translation
ऊर्ध्वबाहुर विशालायां बदर्यां स नराधिपः एकपादस्थितस तीव्रं चचार सुमहत तपः ॥ ३-१८५-४ ॥
'Standing on one leg, with his hand raised upwards, that lord of men performed intense penance in the vast Badarika forest.' ॥ 3-185-4 ॥

अवाक्शिरास तथा चापि नेत्रैर अनिमिषैर दृढम सॊ ऽतप्यत तपॊ घॊरं वर्षाणाम अयुतं तदा ॥ ३-१८५-५ ॥
'With his head bowed and eyes unwavering, he practiced this austere penance for ten thousand years.' ॥ 3-185-5 ॥
