करिष्यामि महाराज वचस ते नात्र संशयः वेगं तु मम दुर धार्यं पतन्त्या गगणाच चयुतम ।। ३-१०७-२१ ।।

sanskrit

'O great king! I am ready to fulfill your request without doubt. However, when I descend from the heavens to the earth, the force of my fall will be challenging to endure.' ।। 3-107-21 ।।

english translation

kariSyAmi mahArAja vacasa te nAtra saMzayaH vegaM tu mama dura dhAryaM patantyA gagaNAca cayutama || 3-107-21 ||

'O protector of men! There is none in the three worlds who can endure my descent, except for Lord Shiva, the most exalted of the gods, the great deity with a throat of deep blue. O prince of mighty strength!' ।। 3-107-22 ।।

'Seek the favor of that same Shiva, the granter of boons, through your austerities. He will support my descent upon his head, and in doing so, he shall fulfill your desire to aid your forefathers, O king!' ।। 3-107-23 ।।

taM tòSaya mahAbAhò tapasA varadaM harama sa tu mAM paracyutAM devaH zirasA dhArayiSyati kariSyati ca te kAmaM pitRRNAM hitakAmyayA || 3-107-23 ||

'Then the great king Bhagiratha, having heard this, journeyed to Mount Kailasa. There, he devoted himself to rigorous penances, and after a considerable time, he secured the favor of that bestower of boons, Lord Shiva.' ।। 3-107-24 ।।

etaca charutvA vacò rAjana mahArAjò bhagIrathaH kailAsaM parvataM gatvA tòSayAma Asa zaMkarama || 3-107-24 ||

'And, O protector of men! That noble king, desiring to secure a place in heaven for his forefathers, received from that very Shiva the fulfillment of his wish—the promise that the descending Ganga would be sustained.' ।। 3-107-25 ।।

tatasa tena samAgamya kAlayògena kena cita agRhNAca ca varaM tasmAda gaGgAyA dhAraNaM nRpa savargavAsaM samuddizya pitRRNAM sa naròttamaH || 3-107-25 ||
