[वै] गन्धर्वैस तु महाराज भग्ने कर्णे महारथे संप्राद्रवच चमूः सर्वा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य पश्यतः ॥ ३-२३१-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana said, "After the great warrior Karna was defeated by the Gandharvas, the entire Kuru army, O monarch, fled from the battlefield in full view of Dhritarashtra's son."' ॥ 3-231-1 ॥

तान दृष्ट्वा दरवतः सर्वान धार्तराष्ट्रान पराङ्मुखान दुर्यॊधनॊ महाराज नासीत तत्र पराङ्मुखः ॥ ३-२३१-२ ॥

'And seeing all his troops fleeing from the battlefield with their backs to the enemy, King Duryodhana refused to retreat.' ॥ 3-231-2 ॥

ताम आपतन्तीं संप्रेक्ष्य गन्धर्वाणां महाचमूम महता शरवर्षेण सॊ ऽभयवर्षद अरिंदमः ॥ ३-२३१-३ ॥

'As the mighty host of the Gandharvas charged towards him, he, the vanquisher of foes, unleashed a thick shower of arrows upon them.' ॥ 3-231-3 ॥

अचिन्त्यशरवर्षं तु गन्धर्वास तस्य तं रथम दुर्यॊधनं जिघांसन्तः समन्तात पर्यवारयन ॥ ३-२३१-४ ॥

'The Gandharvas, undeterred by the shower of arrows, and determined to slay Duryodhana, surrounded his chariot.' ॥ 3-231-4 ॥

acintyazaravarSaM tu gandharvAsa tasya taM rathama duryòdhanaM jighAMsantaH samantAta paryavArayana ॥ 3-231-4 ॥

युगमीषां वरूथं च तथैव धवजसारथी अश्वांस तरिवेणुं तल्पं च तिलशॊ ऽभयहनद रथम ॥ ३-२३१-५ ॥

'With their arrows, they shattered into fragments the yoke, the shaft, the fenders, the flagstaff, the three-fold bamboo poles, and the principal turret of his chariot.' ॥ 3-231-5 ॥
