वाली नाम मम भ्राता ज्येष्ठश्शत्रुनिषूदनः । पितुर्बहुमतो नित्यं ममापि च तथा पुरा ॥ ४-९-१
( Sugriva said ) 'My elder brother called Vali, capable of exterminating enemies was always highly regarded by my father and me. ॥ 4-9-1॥

vAlI nAma mama bhrAtA jyeSThazzatruniSUdanaH । piturbahumato nityaM mamApi ca tathA purA ॥ 4-9-1

'After the demise of our father all the ministers have glorified him immensely and made him the king of all the monkeys as he was the elder. ॥ 4-9-2॥

pitaryuparate'smAkaM jyeSTho'yamiti mantribhiH । kapInAmIzvaro rAjye kRtaH paramasammataH ॥ 4-9-2

'I served him obediently like a servant while he ruled over the great ancestral kingdom inherited by him. ॥ 4-9-3॥

rAjyaM prazAsatastasya pitRpaitAmahaM mahat । ahaM sarveSu kAleSu praNataH preSyavat sthitaH ॥ 4-9-3

'Dundubhi's eldest son Mayavi was a mighty demon. He developed bitter enmity with Vali for the sake of a woman. ॥ 4-9-4॥

mAyAvI nAma tejasvI pUrvajo dundubheH sutaH । tena tasya mahadvairaM strIkRtaM vizzrutaM purA ॥ 4-9-4
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस तु सुप्तजने रात्रौ किष्किन्धाद्वारमागतः । नर्दति स्म सुसंरब्धो वालिनं चाह्वयद्रणे ॥ ४-९-५
'One midnight when all were asleep, he ( Mayavi ) came to the entrance of Kishkinda screaming angrily and bellowing at Vali, challenging him to a duel. ॥ 4-9-5॥

sa tu suptajane rAtrau kiSkindhAdvAramAgataH । nardati sma susaMrabdho vAlinaM cAhvayadraNe ॥ 4-9-5
