राजा दशरथो नाम द्युतिमान्धर्मवत्सलः | चातुर्वर्ण्यं स्वधर्मेण नित्यमेवाभ्यपालयत् || ४-४-६

'The king named Dasharatha, a resplendent one and the patron of virtue was ruling the four-caste system with its, and by his own rectitude, for he is also bound within that four-caste system. [4-4-6]

rAjA dazaratho nAma dyutimAndharmavatsalaH | cAturvarNyaM svadharmeNa nityamevAbhyapAlayat || 4-4-6

न द्वेष्टा विद्यते तस्य न च स द्वेष्टि कञ्चन | स च सर्वेषु भूतेषु पितामह इवापरः || ४-४-७

'He never hated any one nor did any one ever hate him. To all his subjects, he was like another father, the Creator Brahma. [4-4-7]

english translation

na dveSTA vidyate tasya na ca sa dveSTi kaJcana | sa ca sarveSu bhUteSu pitAmaha ivAparaH || 4-4-7

अग्निष्टोमादिभिर्यज्ञैरिष्टवानाप्तदक्षिणैः | तस्यायं पूर्वजः पुत्रो रामो नाम जनैः श्रुतः || ४-४-८

'And he was generous in giving gifts while performing yajnas ( rituals with fire ) like Agnistoma. Here is his eldest son, popularly known as Rama. [4-4-8]

agniSTomAdibhiryajJairiSTavAnAptadakSiNaiH | tasyAyaM pUrvajaH putro rAmo nAma janaiH zrutaH || 4-4-8

शरण्यस्सर्वभूतानां पितुर्निर्देशपारगः | वीरो दशरथस्यायं पुत्राणां गुणवत्तमः || ४-४-९

'He is the protector of all beings and never failed his father's instructions. He is the eldest one among the sons of King Dasharatha, possessor of high virtues, qualities..... - [4-4-9]

राजलक्षणसम्पन्नस्सम्युक्तो राजसम्पदा | राज्याद्भ्रष्टो वने वस्तुं मया सार्धमिहागतः || ४-४-१०

- and royal fortune befitting to a king but he is deprived of his kingdom, and came hither to dwell in the forests nevertheless, followed by me. [4-4-10]
