ताः कृष्णमातरमपत्यमनुप्रविष्टां तुल्यव्यथाः समनुगृह्य शुचः स्रवन्त्यः । तास्ता व्रजप्रियकथाः कथयन्त्य आसन् कृष्णाननेऽर्पितदृशो मृतकप्रतीकाः ॥ १०-१६-२१ ॥
Although the elder gopīs were feeling just as much distress as she and were pouring forth a flood of sorrowful tears, they had to forcibly hold back Kṛṣṇa’s mother, whose consciousness was totally absorbed in her son. Standing like corpses, with their eyes fixed upon His face, these gopīs each took turns recounting the pastimes of the darling of Vraja. ॥ 10-16-21 ॥
english translation
यद्यपि प्रौढ़ गोपियों को उन्हीं के बराबर पीड़ा थी और उनमें शोकपूर्ण अश्रुओं की झड़ी लगी हुई थी किन्तु उन्होंने बलपूर्वक कृष्ण की माता को पकड़े रखा, जिनकी चेतना पूर्णतया अपने पुत्र में समा गयी थी। ये गोपियाँ शवों की तरह खड़ी रहकर, अपनी आँखें कृष्ण के मुख पर टिकाये, बारी बारी से व्रज के परम लाड़ले की लीलाएँ कहे जा रही थीं। ॥ १०-१६-२१ ॥

tAH kRSNamAtaramapatyamanupraviSTAM tulyavyathAH samanugRhya zucaH sravantyaH । tAstA vrajapriyakathAH kathayantya Asan kRSNAnane'rpitadRzo mRtakapratIkAH ॥ 10-16-21 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकृष्णप्राणान्निर्विशतो नन्दादीन् वीक्ष्य तं ह्रदम् । प्रत्यषेधत्स भगवान् रामः कृष्णानुभाववित् ॥ १०-१६-२२ ॥
Lord Balarāma then saw that Nanda Mahārāja and the other cowherd men, who had dedicated their very lives to Kṛṣṇa, were beginning to enter the serpent’s lake. As the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Balarāma fully knew Lord Kṛṣṇa’s actual power, and therefore He restrained them. ॥ 10-16-22 ॥

तत्पश्चात् भगवान् बलराम ने देखा कि नन्द महाराज तथा कृष्ण को अपना जीवन अर्पित करनेवाले अन्य ग्वाले सर्प-सरोवर में प्रवेश करने जा रहे हैं। भगवान् होने के नाते बलराम को कृष्ण की वास्तविक शक्ति का पूरा पूरा ज्ञान था अतएव उन्होंने उन सबों को रोका। ॥ १०-१६-२२ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptइत्थं स्वगोकुलमनन्यगतिं निरीक्ष्य सस्त्रीकुमारमतिदुःखितमात्महेतोः । आज्ञाय मर्त्यपदवीमनुवर्तमानः स्थित्वा मुहूर्तमुदतिष्ठदुरङ्गबन्धात् ॥ १०-१६-२३ ॥
The Lord remained for some time within the coils of the serpent, imitating the behavior of an ordinary mortal. But when He understood that the women, children and other residents of His village of Gokula were in acute distress because of their love for Him, their only shelter and goal in life, He immediately rose up from the bonds of the Kāliya serpent. ॥ 10-16-23 ॥
english translation
भगवान् कुछ काल तक सामान्य मर्त्यप्राणी के व्यवहार का अनुकरण करते हुए सर्प की कुंडली के भीतर पड़े रहे। किन्तु जब उन्हें इसका भान हुआ कि उनके गोकुल ग्राम की स्त्रियाँ, बच्चे तथा अन्य निवासी अपने जीवन के एकमात्र आधार उनके प्रेम के कारण विकट दुखी हैं, तो वे कालिय सर्प के बन्धन से तुरन्त उठ खड़े हुए। ॥ १०-१६-२३ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptतत्प्रथ्यमानवपुषा व्यथितात्मभोगस्त्यक्त्वोन्नमय्य कुपितः स्वफणान् भुजङ्गः । तस्थौ श्वसञ्छ्वसनरन्ध्रविषाम्बरीषस्तब्धेक्षणोल्मुकमुखो हरिमीक्षमाणः ॥ १०-१६-२४ ॥
His coils tormented by the expanding body of the Lord, Kāliya released Him. In great anger the serpent then raised his hoods high and stood still, breathing heavily. His nostrils appeared like vessels for cooking poison, and the staring eyes in his face like firebrands. Thus the serpent looked at the Lord. ॥ 10-16-24 ॥

जब भगवान् के शरीर का विस्तार होने से कालिय की कुंडली दुखने लगी तो उसने उन्हें छोड़ दिया। तब वह सर्प बहुत ही क्रुद्ध होकर अपने फनों को ऊँचे उठाकर स्थिर खड़ा हो गया और जोर जोर से फुफकारने लगा। उसके नथुने विष पकाने के पात्रों जैसे लग रहे थे और उसके मुखपर स्थित घूरती आँखें आग की लपटों की तरह लग रही थीं। इस तरह उस सर्प ने भगवान् पर नजर डाली। ॥ १०-१६-२४ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptतं जिह्वया द्विशिखया परिलेलिहानं द्वे सृक्किणी ह्यतिकरालविषाग्निदृष्टिम् । क्रीडन्नमुं परिससार यथा खगेन्द्रो बभ्राम सोऽप्यवसरं प्रसमीक्षमाणः ॥ १०-१६-२५ ॥
Again and again Kāliya licked his lips with his bifurcated tongues as He stared at Kṛṣṇa with a glance full of terrible, poisonous fire. But Kṛṣṇa playfully circled around him, just as Garuḍa would play with a snake. In response, Kāliya also moved about, looking for an opportunity to bite the Lord. ॥ 10-16-25 ॥

कालिय बारम्बार अपनी दोमुही जीभ से अपने होंठों को चाटता और विषैली विकराल अग्नि से पूर्ण अपनी दृष्टि से कृष्ण को घूरता जा रहा था। किन्तु कृष्ण ने मानो खेल-खेल में ही उसका उसी तरह चक्कर लगाया जिस तरह गरुड़ सर्प से खिलवाड़ करता है। प्रतिक्रिया के रूप में, कालिय भी उनके साथ साथ घूमता जाता था और भगवान् को काटने का अवसर ढूँढ़ रहा था। ॥ १०-१६-२५ ॥
