श्रीशुक उवाच गोपा नन्दादयः श्रुत्वा द्रुमयोः पततो रवम् । तत्राजग्मुः कुरुश्रेष्ठ निर्घातभयशङ्किताः ।। १०-११-१ ।।

sanskrit

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: O Mahārāja Parīkṣit, when the yamala-arjuna trees fell, all the cowherd men in the neighborhood, hearing the fierce sound and fearing thunderbolts, went to the spot. ।। 10-11-1 ।।

english translation

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने आगे कहा : हे महाराज परीक्षित, जब यमलार्जुन वृक्ष गिर पड़े तो आसपास के सारे ग्वाले भयानक शब्द सुन कर वज्रपात की आशंका से उस स्थान पर गये। ।। १०-११-१ ।।

भूम्यां निपतितौ तत्र ददृशुर्यमलार्जुनौ । बभ्रमुस्तदविज्ञाय लक्ष्यं पतनकारणम् ।। १०-११-२ ।।

sanskrit

There they saw the fallen yamala-arjuna trees on the ground, but they were bewildered because even though they could directly perceive that the trees had fallen, they could not trace out the cause for their having done so. ।। 10-11-2 ।।

english translation

वहाँ उन सबों ने यमलार्जुन वृक्षों को जमीन पर गिरे हुए तो देखा किन्तु वे विमोहित थे क्योंकि वे आँखों के सामने वृक्षों को गिरे हुए तो देख रहे थे किन्तु उनके गिरने के कारण का पता नहीं लगा पा रहे थे। ।। १०-११-२ ।।

उलूखलं विकर्षन्तं दाम्ना बद्धं च बालकम् । कस्येदं कुत आश्चर्यमुत्पात इति कातराः ।। १०-११-३ ।।

sanskrit

Kṛṣṇa was bound by the rope to the ulūkhala, the mortar, which He was dragging. But how could He have pulled down the trees? Who had actually done it? Where was the source for this incident? Considering all these astounding things, the cowherd men were doubtful and bewildered. ।। 10-11-3 ।।

english translation

कृष्ण रस्सी द्वारा ओखली से बँधे थे जिसे वे खींच रहे थे। किन्तु उन्होंने वृक्षों को किस तरह गिरा लिया? वास्तव में किसने यह किया? इस घटना का स्रोत कहाँ है? इन आश्चर्यजनक बातों को सोच सोच कर सारे ग्वाले सशंकित तथा मोहग्रस्त थे। ।। १०-११-३ ।।

बाला ऊचुरनेनेति तिर्यग्गतमुलूखलम् । विकर्षता मध्यगेन पुरुषावप्यचक्ष्महि ।। १०-११-४ ।।

sanskrit

Then all the cowherd boys said: It is Kṛṣṇa who has done this. When He was in between the two trees, the mortar fell crosswise. Kṛṣṇa dragged the mortar, and the two trees fell down. After that, two beautiful men came out of the trees. We have seen this with our own eyes. ।। 10-11-4 ।।

english translation

तब सारे ग्वालबालों ने कहा : इसे तो कृष्ण ने ही किया है। जब यह दो वृक्षों के बीच में था, तो ओखली तिरछी हो गई। कृष्ण ने ओखली को खींचा तो दोनों वृक्ष गिर गये। इसके बाद इन वृक्षों से दो सुन्दर व्यक्ति निकल आये। हमने इसे अपनी आँखों से देखा है। ।। १०-११-४ ।।

न ते तदुक्तं जगृहुर्न घटेतेति तस्य तत् । बालस्योत्पाटनं तर्वोः केचित्सन्दिग्धचेतसः ।। १०-११-५ ।।

sanskrit

Because of intense paternal affection, the cowherd men, headed by Nanda, could not believe that Kṛṣṇa could have uprooted the trees in such a wonderful way. Therefore they could not put their faith in the words of the boys. Some of the men, however, were in doubt. “Since Kṛṣṇa was predicted to equal Nārāyaṇa,” they thought, “it might be that He could have done it.” ।। 10-11-5 ।।

english translation

तीव्र पितृ-स्नेह के कारण नन्द इत्यादि ग्वालों को विश्वास ही नहीं हुआ कि कृष्ण ने इतने आश्चर्यमय ढंग से वृक्षों को उखाड़ा है। अतएव उन्हें बच्चों के कहने पर विश्वास नहीं हुआ। किन्तु उनमें से कुछ को सन्देह था। वे सोच रहे थे, “चूँकि कृष्ण के लिए भविष्यवाणी की गई थी कि वह नारायण के तुल्य है अतएव हो सकता है कि उसी ने यह किया हो।” ।। १०-११-५ ।।
