तान् दृष्ट्वा राजशार्दूलो वसिष्ठं पर्यपृच्छत । असौम्याः पक्षिणो घोरा मृगाश्चापि प्रदक्षिणाः ॥ १-७४-११

On seeing that, the tiger among men ( King Dasharatha ), enquired of Vasishtha: 'While the frightening birds are inauspicious, the deer are going leftwards - ॥ 1-74-11॥

english translation

tAn dRSTvA rAjazArdUlo vasiSThaM paryapRcchata । asaumyAH pakSiNo ghorA mRgAzcApi pradakSiNAH ॥ 1-74-11

किमिदं हृदयोत्कंपि मनो मम विषीदति । राज्ञो दशरथस्यैतत् श्रुत्वा वाक्यं महानृषिः ॥ १-७४-१२

- Why is this? My heart beats. My mind is depressed.' To these words of king Dasharatha the great ascetic Vahsishtha . - ॥ 1-74-12॥

english translation

kimidaM hRdayotkaMpi mano mama viSIdati । rAjJo dazarathasyaitat zrutvA vAkyaM mahAnRSiH ॥ 1-74-12

उवाच मधुरां वाणीं श्रूयतामस्य यत्फलम् । उपस्थितं भयं घोरं दिव्यं पक्षिमुखाच्च्युतम् ॥ १-७४-१३

- replied in a gentle voice, 'I shall tell you the consequences Listen. The dreadful cries from the mouths of birds foretell an event of celestial and fearful nature likely to befall - ॥ 1-74-13॥

english translation

uvAca madhurAM vANIM zrUyatAmasya yatphalam । upasthitaM bhayaM ghoraM divyaM pakSimukhAccyutam ॥ 1-74-13

मृगाः प्रशमयन्त्येते संतापः त्यज्यतामयम् । तेषां संवदतां तत्र वायुः प्रादुर्बभूव ह ॥ १-७४-१४

- but the movements ( from left to right ) other of deer indicate restoration of peace. Therefore do not grieve. While they were discussing among themselves, a whirlwind started to whirligig there - ॥ 1-74-14॥

mRgAH prazamayantyete saMtApaH tyajyatAmayam । teSAM saMvadatAM tatra vAyuH prAdurbabhUva ha ॥ 1-74-14

कंपयन् मेदिनीं सर्वां पातयंश्च महाद्रुमान् । तमसा संवृतः सूर्यः सर्वे न वेदिषुर्दिशः ॥ १-७४-१५

- shaking the earth and felling down all gigantic trees. Murkiness enshrouded the sun, thus everyone was unaware of quarters - ॥ 1-74-15॥

kaMpayan medinIM sarvAM pAtayaMzca mahAdrumAn । tamasA saMvRtaH sUryaH sarve na vediSurdizaH ॥ 1-74-15
