यदा दुर्वाससः शापात्सेन्द्रा लोकास्त्रयो नृप । निःश्रीकाश्चाभवंस्तत्र नेशुरिज्यादयः क्रियाः ॥ ८-५-१६ ॥
At that time, O King, the demigods had been cursed by Durvāsā Muni, the three worlds were poverty-stricken, and therefore ritualistic ceremonies could not be performed. The effects of this were very serious. ॥ 8-5-16 ॥

हे राजा! उस समय देवताओं को दुर्वासा मुनि ने शाप दिया हुआ था, तीनों लोक दरिद्रता से पीडि़त थे; इसीलिए अनुष्ठान सम्पन्न नहीं हो पा रहे थे। इसके प्रभाव अत्यन्त गम्भीर थे। ॥ ८-५-१६ ॥

Lord Indra, Varuṇa and the other demigods, seeing their lives in such a state, consulted among themselves, but they could not find any solution. ॥ 8-5-17 ॥

अपने जीवनों को ऐसी स्थिति में देखकर इन्द्र, वरुण तथा अन्य देवताओं ने परस्पर विचार विमर्श किया, किन्तु उन्हें कोई हल न मिल सका। ॥ ८-५-१७ ॥

Then all the demigods assembled and went together to the peak of Sumeru Mountain. There, in the assembly of Lord Brahmā, they fell down to offer Lord Brahmā their obeisances, and then they informed him of all the incidents that had taken place. ॥ 8-5-18 ॥

तब सारे देवता एकत्र हुए और वे एकसाथ सुमेरु पर्वत की चोटी पर गये। वहाँ पर ब्रह्मा जी की सभा में सब ने ब्रह्मा जी को साष्टांग प्रणाम किया और जितनी सारी घटनाओं से अवगत कराया। ॥ ८-५-१८ ॥

Upon seeing that the demigods were bereft of all influence and strength and that the three worlds were consequently devoid of auspiciousness, and upon seeing that the demigods were in an awkward position whereas all the demons were flourishing Lord Brahmā, ॥ 8-5-19 ॥

यह देखकर कि सारे देवता प्रभावहीन तथा बलहीन हो गये हैं जिसके फलस्वरूप तीनों लोक अमंगलमय हो चुके हैं तथा यह देखकर कि देवताओं की स्थिति अटपटी है, किन्तु असुरगण फल-फूल रहे हैं ब्रह्मा ने, ॥ ८-५-१९ ॥

Who is above all the demigods and who is most powerful, concentrated his mind on the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Thus being encouraged, he became bright-faced and spoke to the demigods as follows. ॥ 8-5-20 ॥

जो समस्त देवताओं के ऊपर हैं और अत्यन्त शक्तिशाली हैं अपना मन भगवान् पर केन्द्रित किया। इस प्रकार प्रोत्साहित होने से उनका मुख चमक उठा और वे देवताओं से इस प्रकार बोले। ॥ ८-५-२० ॥
