Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O King Parīkṣit, when Bali Mahārāja was thus advised by his spiritual master, Śukrācārya, his family priest, he remained silent for some time, and then, after full deliberation, he replied to his spiritual master as follows. ।। 8-20-1 ।।

श्री शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा : हे राजा परीक्षित! जब बलि महाराज को उनके गुरु एवं कुलपुरोहित शुक्राचार्य ने इस प्रकार सलाह दी तो वे कुछ समय तक चुप रहे और फिर पूर्ण विचार-विमर्श के बाद अपने गुरु से इस प्रकार बोले। ।। ८-२०-१ ।।
बलिरुवाच सत्यं भगवता प्रोक्तं धर्मोऽयं गृहमेधिनाम् । अर्थं कामं यशो वृत्तिं यो न बाधेत कर्हिचित् ।। ८-२०-२ ।।
Bali Mahārāja said: As you have already stated, the principle of religion that does not hinder one’s economic development, sense gratification, fame and means of livelihood is the real occupational duty of the householder. I also think that this religious principle is correct. ।। 8-20-2 ।।

बलि महाराज ने कहा : जैसा कि आप कह चुके हैं, जो धर्म किसी के आर्थिक विकास, इन्द्रियतृप्ति, यश तथा जीविका के साधन में बाधक नहीं होता वही गृहस्थ का असली धर्म है। मैं भी सोचता हूँ कि यही धर्म सही है। ।। ८-२०-२ ।।

baliruvAca satyaM bhagavatA proktaM dharmo'yaM gRhamedhinAm | arthaM kAmaM yazo vRttiM yo na bAdheta karhicit || 8-20-2 ||
स चाहं वित्तलोभेन प्रत्याचक्षे कथं द्विजम् । प्रतिश्रुत्य ददामीति प्राह्लादिः कितवो यथा ।। ८-२०-३ ।।
I am the grandson of Mahārāja Prahlāda. How can I withdraw my promise because of greed for money when I have already said that I shall give this land? How can I behave like an ordinary cheater, especially toward a brāhmaṇa? ।। 8-20-3 ।।
english translation
मैं महाराज प्रह्लाद का पौत्र हूँ। जब मैं पहले ही कह चुका हूँ कि मैं यह भूमि दान में दूँगा तो फिर धन के लालच से मैं अपने वचन से किस तरह विचलित हो सकता हूँ? मैं किस तरह एक सामान्य वञ्चक का आचरण कर सकता हूँ और वह भी एक ब्राह्मण के प्रति? ।। ८-२०-३ ।।
There is nothing more sinful than untruthfulness. Because of this, mother earth once said, “I can bear any heavy thing except a person who is a liar.” ।। 8-20-4 ।।

असत्य से बढक़र पापमय कुछ भी नहीं है। इसी कारण से एक बार माता पृथ्वी ने कहा था, “मैं किसी भी भारी बोझ को सहन कर सकती हूँ, किसी झूठे व्यक्ति को नहीं।” ।। ८-२०-४ ।।
