श्रीशुक उवाच इति दानवदैतेया नाविन्दन्नमृतं नृप । युक्ताः कर्मणि यत्ताश्च वासुदेवपराङ्मुखाः ।। ८-१०-१ ।।

sanskrit

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O King, the demons and Daityas all engaged with full attention and effort in churning the ocean, but because they were not devotees of Vāsudeva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, they were not able to drink the nectar. ।। 8-10-1 ।।

english translation

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा : हे राजा! यद्यपि असुर तथा दैत्य पूरे मनोयोग तथा श्रम के साथ समुद्र-मन्थन में लगे थे, किन्तु भगवान् वासुदेव के भक्त न होने के कारण वे अमृत नहीं पी सके। ।। ८-१०-१ ।।

साधयित्वामृतं राजन् पाययित्वा स्वकान् सुरान् । पश्यतां सर्वभूतानां ययौ गरुडवाहनः ।। ८-१०-२ ।।

sanskrit

O King, after the Supreme Personality of Godhead had brought to completion the affairs of churning the ocean and feeding the nectar to the demigods, who are His dear devotees, He left the presence of them all and was carried by Garuḍa to His own abode. ।। 8-10-2 ।।

english translation

हे राजा! समुद्र-मन्थन का कार्य पूरा कर लेने तथा अपने प्रिय भक्त देवताओं को अमृत पिला लेने के बाद भगवान् ने उन सबके देखते-देखते वहाँ से विदा ली और गरुड़ पर चढक़र अपने धाम चले गये। ।। ८-१०-२ ।।

सपत्नानां परामृद्धिं दृष्ट्वा ते दितिनन्दनाः । अमृष्यमाणा उत्पेतुर्देवान् प्रत्युद्यतायुधाः ।। ८-१०-३ ।।

sanskrit

Seeing the victory of the demigods, the demons became intolerant of their superior opulence. Thus they began to march toward the demigods with raised weapons. ।। 8-10-3 ।।

english translation

देवताओं की विजय देखकर असुरगण उनके श्रेष्ठतर ऐश्वर्य को सहन न कर सके। अत: वे अपने-अपने हथियार उठाकर देवताओं की ओर दौड़ पड़े। ।। ८-१०-३ ।।

ततः सुरगणाः सर्वे सुधया पीतयैधिताः । प्रतिसंयुयुधुः शस्त्रैर्नारायणपदाश्रयाः ।। ८-१०-४ ।।

sanskrit

Thereafter, being enlivened because of drinking the nectar, the demigods, who are always at the shelter of the lotus feet of Nārāyaṇa, used their various weapons to counterattack the demons in a fighting spirit. ।। 8-10-4 ।।

english translation

तत्पश्चात् अमृत पीने से उत्तेजित देवताओं ने जो सदैव नारायण के चरणकमलों की शरण में रहते हैं असुरों पर प्रत्याक्रमण करने के लिए युद्ध की मनोवृत्ति से अपने विविध हथियारों का प्रयोग किया। ।। ८-१०-४ ।।

तत्र दैवासुरो नाम रणः परमदारुणः । रोधस्युदन्वतो राजंस्तुमुलो रोमहर्षणः ।। ८-१०-५ ।।

sanskrit

O King, a fierce battle on the beach of the Ocean of Milk ensued between the demigods and the demons. The fighting was so terrible that simply hearing about it would make the hair on one’s body stand on end. ।। 8-10-5 ।।

english translation

हे राजा! देवताओं तथा असुरों के मध्य क्षीरसागर के तट पर घमासान युद्ध शुरु हो गया। यह युद्ध इतना भयंकर था कि इसके विषय में सुनने से ही शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो जाते हैं। ।। ८-१०-५ ।।
