राजोवाच भगवन् श्रोतुमिच्छामि हरेरद्भुतकर्मणः । अवतारकथामाद्यां मायामत्स्यविडम्बनम् ।। ८-२४-१ ।।

sanskrit

Mahārāja Parīkṣit said: The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, is eternally situated in His transcendental position, yet He descends to this material world and manifests Himself in various incarnations. His first incarnation was that of a great fish. O most powerful Śukadeva Gosvāmī, I wish to hear from you the pastimes of that fish incarnation. ।। 8-24-1 ।।

english translation

महाराज परीक्षित ने कहा : भगवान् हरि नित्य ही अपने दिव्य पद पर स्थित हैं; फिर भी वे इस भौतिक जगत में अवतरित होते हैं और विभिन्न रूपों में अपने आपको प्रकट करते हैं। उनका पहला अवतार एक बड़ी मछली के रूप में हुआ। हे सर्व-शक्तिमान शुकदेव गोस्वामी! मैं आपसे उस मत्स्यावतार की लीलाएँ सुनने का इच्छुक हूँ। ।। ८-२४-१ ।।

यदर्थमदधाद्रूपं मात्स्यं लोकजुगुप्सितम् । तमःप्रकृतिदुर्मर्षं कर्मग्रस्त इवेश्वरः ।। ८-२४-२ ।।

sanskrit

What was the purpose for which the Supreme Personality of Godhead accepted the abominable form of a fish, exactly as an ordinary living being accepts different forms under the laws of karma? The form of a fish is certainly condemned and full of terrible pain. ।। 8-24-2 ।।

english translation

किस कारण से भगवान् ने कर्म-नियम के अन्तर्गत विविध रूप धारण करने वाले सामान्य जीव की भाँति गर्हित मछली का रूप स्वीकार किया? मछली का रूप निश्चित रूप से गर्हित एवं घोर पीड़ा से पूर्ण होता है। ।। ८-२४-२ ।।

yadarthamadadhAdrUpaM mAtsyaM lokajugupsitam | tamaHprakRtidurmarSaM karmagrasta ivezvaraH || 8-24-2 ||

एतन्नो भगवन् सर्वं यथावद्वक्तुमर्हसि । उत्तमश्लोकचरितं सर्वलोकसुखावहम् ।। ८-२४-३ ।।

sanskrit

O my lord, what was the purpose of this incarnation? Kindly explain this to us, for hearing about the pastimes of the Lord is auspicious for everyone. ।। 8-24-3 ।।

english translation

हे प्रभु! इस अवतार का क्या उद्देश्य था? कृपा करके मुझे समझाइये क्योंकि भगवान् की लीलाओं का श्रवण हर एक के लिए मंगलकारी होता है। ।। ८-२४-३ ।।

सूत उवाच इत्युक्तो विष्णुरातेन भगवान् बादरायणिः । उवाच चरितं विष्णोर्मत्स्यरूपेण यत्कृतम् ।। ८-२४-४ ।।

sanskrit

Sūta Gosvāmī said: When Parīkṣit Mahārāja thus inquired from Śukadeva Gosvāmī, that most powerful saintly person began describing the pastimes of the Lord’s incarnation as a fish. ।। 8-24-4 ।।

english translation

सूत गोस्वामी ने कहा : जब परीक्षित महाराज ने शुकदेव गोस्वामी से इस प्रकार जिज्ञासा प्रकट की तो उस महान् शक्तिशाली साधु पुरुष ने भगवान् के मत्स्यावतार की लीलाओं का वर्णन करना प्रारम्भ कर दिया। ।। ८-२४-४ ।।

श्रीशुक उवाच गोविप्रसुरसाधूनां छन्दसामपि चेश्वरः । रक्षामिच्छंस्तनूर्धत्ते धर्मस्यार्थस्य चैव हि ।। ८-२४-५ ।।

sanskrit

Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O King, for the sake of protecting the cows, brāhmaṇas, demigods, devotees, the Vedic literature, religious principles, and principles to fulfill the purpose of life, the Supreme Personality of Godhead accepts the forms of incarnations. ।। 8-24-5 ।।

english translation

श्रीशुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा : हे राजन्! गायों, ब्राह्मणों, देवताओं, भक्तों, वैदिक वाङ्मय, धार्मिक सिद्धान्तों तथा जीवन के उद्देश्य को पूरा करने वाले नियमों की रक्षा करने के लिए भगवान् अवतरित होते हैं। ।। ८-२४-५ ।।
