अथ तार्क्ष्यसुतो ज्ञात्वा विराट् प्रभुचिकीर्षितम् । बबन्ध वारुणैः पाशैर्बलिं सौत्येऽहनि क्रतौ ॥ ८-२१-२६ ॥
When Bali Mahārāja was thus arrested by Lord Viṣṇu, who is the most powerful, there was a great roar of lamentation in all directions throughout the upper and lower planetary systems of the universe. ॥ 8-21-27 ।।

तत्पश्चात् यज्ञ समाप्त हो जाने के बाद सोमपान के दिन पक्षिराज गरुड़ ने अपने स्वामी की इच्छा जानकर बलि महाराज को वरुणपाश से बन्दी बना लिया। ॥ ८-२१-२६ ॥

हाहाकारो महानासीद्रोदस्योः सर्वतोदिशम् । निगृह्यमाणेऽसुरपतौ विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना ॥ ८-२१-२७ ॥

जब बलि महाराज परम शक्तिशाली भगवान् विष्णु द्वारा इस प्रकार बन्दी बना लिये गये तो ब्रह्माण्ड के अधो तथा ऊर्ध्व लोकों की समस्त दिशाओं में विलाप का आर्तनाद हुआ। ॥ ८-२१-२७ ॥

तं बद्धं वारुणैः पाशैर्भगवानाह वामनः । नष्टश्रियं स्थिरप्रज्ञमुदारयशसं नृप ॥ ८-२१-२८ ॥
O King, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vāmanadeva, then spoke to Bali Mahārāja, the most liberal and celebrated personality whom He had arrested with the ropes of Varuṇa. Bali Mahārāja had lost all bodily luster, but he was nonetheless fixed in his determination. ॥ 8-21-28 ।।
english translation
हे राजा! तब भगवान् वामनदेव अत्यन्त उदार एवं विख्यात बलि महाराज से बोले जिन्हें उन्होंने वरुणपाश से बन्दी बनवा लिया था। यद्यपि बलि महाराज के शरीर की सारी कान्ति जा चुकी थी तो भी वे अपने निर्णय पर अटल थे। ॥ ८-२१-२८ ॥

पदानि त्रीणि दत्तानि भूमेर्मह्यं त्वयासुर । द्वाभ्यां क्रान्ता मही सर्वा तृतीयमुपकल्पय ॥ ८-२१-२९ ॥
O King of the demons, you have promised to give Me three steps of land, but I have occupied the entire universe with two steps. Now think about where I should put My third. ॥ 8-21-29 ।।

हे असुरराज! तुमने मुझे तीन पग भूमि देने का वचन दिया है, किन्तु मैंने तो दो ही पग में सारा ब्रह्माण्ड घेर लिया है। अब बताओ कि मैं अपना तीसरा पग कहाँ रखूँ? ॥ ८-२१-२९ ॥

यावत्तपत्यसौ गोभिर्यावदिन्दुः सहोडुभिः । यावद्वर्षति पर्जन्यस्तावती भूरियं तव ॥ ८-२१-३० ॥
As far as the sun and moon shine with the stars and as far as the clouds pour rain, all the land throughout the universe is in your possession. ॥ 8-21-30 ।।
english translation
जहाँ तक सूर्य तथा तारों सहित चन्द्रमा चमक रहे हैं और जहाँ तक बादल वर्षा करते हैं, वहाँ तक ब्रह्माण्ड की सारी भूमि आपके अधिकार में है। ॥ ८-२१-३० ॥
