स त्वहं त्यक्तकारुण्यस्त्यक्तज्ञातिसुहृत्खलः । कान् लोकान् वै गमिष्यामि ब्रह्महेव मृतः श्वसन् ।। १०-४-१६ ।।

sanskrit

Being merciless and cruel, I have forsaken all my relatives and friends. Therefore, like a person who has killed a brāhmaṇa, I do not know to which planet I shall go, either after death or while breathing. ।। 10-4-16 ।।

english translation

मैंने दयाविहीन तथा क्रूर होने के कारण अपने सारे सम्बन्धियों तथा मित्रों का परित्याग कर दिया है। अत: मैं नहीं जानता कि ब्राह्मण का वध करने वाले व्यक्ति के समान मृत्यु के बाद या इस जीवित अवस्था में मैं किस लोक को जाऊँगा? ।। १०-४-१६ ।।

दैवमप्यनृतं वक्ति न मर्त्या एव केवलम् । यद्विश्रम्भादहं पापः स्वसुर्निहतवाञ्छिशून् ।। १०-४-१७ ।।

sanskrit

Alas, not only human beings but sometimes even providence lies. And I am so sinful that I believed the omen of providence and killed so many of my sister’s children. ।। 10-4-17 ।।

english translation

हाय! कभी-कभी न केवल मनुष्य झूठ बोलते हैं अपितु विधाता भी झूठ बोलता है। और मैं इतना पापी हूँ कि मैंने विधाता की भविष्यवाणी को मानते हुए अपनी ही बहन के इतने बच्चों का वध कर दिया। ।। १०-४-१७ ।।

मा शोचतं महाभागावात्मजान् स्वकृतम्भुजः । जन्तवो न सदैकत्र दैवाधीनास्तदासते ।। १०-४-१८ ।।

sanskrit

O great souls, your children have suffered their own misfortune. Therefore, please do not lament for them. All living entities are under the control of the Supreme, and they cannot always live together. ।। 10-4-18 ।।

english translation

हे महान् आत्माओ, तुम दोनों के पुत्रों को अपने ही दुर्भाग्य का फल भोगना पड़ा है। अत: तुम उनके लिए शोक मत करो। सारे जीव परमेश्वर के नियंत्रण में होते हैं और वे सदैव एकसाथ नहीं रह सकते। ।। १०-४-१८ ।।

mA zocataM mahAbhAgAvAtmajAn svakRtambhujaH | jantavo na sadaikatra daivAdhInAstadAsate || 10-4-18 ||

भुवि भौमानि भूतानि यथा यान्त्यपयान्ति च । नायमात्मा तथैतेषु विपर्येति यथैव भूः ।। १०-४-१९ ।।

sanskrit

In this world, we can see that pots, dolls and other products of the earth appear, break and then disappear, mixing with the earth. Similarly, the bodies of all conditioned living entities are annihilated, but the living entities, like the earth itself, are unchanging and never annihilated [na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre]. ।। 10-4-19 ।।

english translation

इस संसार में हम देखते हैं कि बर्तन, खिलौने तथा पृथ्वी के अन्य पदार्थ प्रकट होते हैं, टूटते हैं और फिर पृथ्वी में मिलकर विलुप्त हो जाते हैं। ठीक इसी तरह बद्धजीवों के शरीर विनष्ट होते रहते हैं, किन्तु पृथ्वी की ही तरह ये जीव अपरिवर्तित रहते हैं और कभी विनष्ट नहीं होते (न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे )। ।। १०-४-१९ ।।

यथानेवंविदो भेदो यत आत्मविपर्ययः । देहयोगवियोगौ च संसृतिर्न निवर्तते ।। १०-४-२० ।।

sanskrit

One who does not understand the constitutional position of the body and the soul [ātmā] becomes too attached to the bodily concept of life. Consequently, because of attachment to the body and its by-products, he feels affected by union with and separation from his family, society and nation. As long as this continues, one continues his material life. [Otherwise, one is liberated.] ।। 10-4-20 ।।

english translation

जो व्यक्ति शरीर तथा आत्मा की स्वाभाविक स्थिति को नहीं समझता वह देहात्मबुद्धि के प्रति अत्यधिक अनुरक्त रहता है। फलस्वरूप शरीर तथा उसके प्रतिफलों के प्रति अनुरक्ति के कारण वह अपने परिवार, समाज तथा राष्ट्र के साथ संयोग तथा वियोग का अनुभव करता है। जब तक ऐसा बना रहता है तब तक वह भौतिक जीवन बिताता है (अन्यथा मुक्त है)। ।। १०-४-२० ।।
