गिरयो मुमुचुस्तोयं क्वचिन्न मुमुचुः शिवम् । यथा ज्ञानामृतं काले ज्ञानिनो ददते न वा ॥ १०-२०-३६ ॥
During this season the mountains sometimes released their pure water and sometimes did not, just as experts in transcendental science sometimes give the nectar of transcendental knowledge and sometimes do not. ॥ 10-20-36 ॥

इस ऋतु में पर्वत कभी तो अपना शुद्ध जल मुक्त करते थे और कभी नहीं करते थे जिस तरह कि दिव्य विज्ञान में पटु लोग कभी तो दिव्य ज्ञान रूपी अमृत प्रदान करते हैं और कभी कभी नहीं करते। ॥ १०-२०-३६ ॥

नैवाविदन् क्षीयमाणं जलं गाधजलेचराः । यथायुरन्वहं क्षय्यं नरा मूढाः कुटुम्बिनः ॥ १०-२०-३७ ॥
The fish swimming in the increasingly shallow water did not at all understand that the water was diminishing, just as foolish family men cannot see how the time they have left to live is diminishing with every passing day. ॥ 10-20-37 ॥

अत्यन्त छिछले जल में तैरनेवाली मछलियाँ यह नहीं जान पाईं कि जल घट रहा है, जिस तरह कि परिवार के मूर्ख लोग यह नहीं देख पाते कि हर दिन के बीतने पर उनकी बाकी आयु किस तरह क्षीण होती जा रही है। ॥ १०-२०-३७ ॥

गाधवारिचरास्तापमविन्दञ्छरदर्कजम् । यथा दरिद्रः कृपणः कुटुम्ब्यविजितेन्द्रियः ॥ १०-२०-३८ ॥
Just as a miserly, poverty-stricken person overly absorbed in family life suffers because he cannot control his senses, the fish swimming in the shallow water had to suffer the heat of the autumn sun. ॥ 10-20-38 ॥

जिस प्रकार कंजूस तथा निर्धन कुटुम्बी अपनी इन्द्रियों को वश में न रखने के कारण कष्ट पाता है उसी तरह छिछले जल में तैरनेवाली मछलियों को शरदकालीन सूर्य का ताप सहना पड़ता है। ॥ १०-२०-३८ ॥

शनैः शनैर्जहुः पङ्कं स्थलान्यामं च वीरुधः । यथाहम्ममतां धीराः शरीरादिष्वनात्मसु १०-२०-३९ ॥
Gradually the different areas of land gave up their muddy condition and the plants grew past their unripe stage, in the same way that sober sages give up egotism and possessiveness. These are based on things different from the real self, namely, the material body and its by-products. ॥ 10-20-39 ॥

धीरे धीरे स्थल के विभिन्न भागों ने अपनी कीचड़-युक्त अवस्था त्याग दी और पौधे अपनी कच्ची अवस्था से आगे बढ़ गये। यह उसी तरह हुआ जिस तरह कि धीर मुनि अपना अहंभाव तथा ममता त्याग देते हैं। ये वास्तविक आत्मा—अर्थात् भौतिक शरीर तथा इसके उत्पादों से सर्वथा भिन्न वस्तुओं—पर आधृत होते हैं। ॥ १०-२०-३९ ॥

निश्चलाम्बुरभूत्तूष्णीं समुद्रः शरदागमे । आत्मन्युपरते सम्यङ्मुनिर्व्युपरतागमः ॥ १०-२०-४० ॥
With the arrival of autumn, the ocean and the lakes became silent, their water still, just like a sage who has desisted from all material activities and given up his recitation of Vedic mantras. ॥ 10-20-40 ॥
english translation
शरद ऋतु के आते ही समुद्र तथा सरोवर शान्त हो गये, उनका जल उस मुनि की तरह शान्त हो गया जो सारे भौतिक कार्यों से विरत हो गया हो और जिसने वैदिक मंत्रों का पाठ बन्द कर दिया हो। ॥ १०-२०-४० ॥
