तं जुगुप्सितकर्माणं नृशंसं निरपत्रपम् । वसुदेवो महाभाग उवाच परिसान्त्वयन् ।। १०-१-३६ ।।

Wanting to pacify Kaṁsa, who was so cruel and envious that he was shamelessly ready to kill his sister, the great soul Vasudeva, who was to be the father of Kṛṣṇa, spoke to him in the following words. ।। 10-1-36 ।।

english translation

कंस इतना क्रूर तथा ईर्ष्यालु था कि वह निर्लज्जतापूर्वक अपनी बहन को मारने के लिए तैयार था अत: उसे शान्त करने के लिए कृष्ण के होने वाले पिता महात्मा वसुदेव ने उससे निम्नलिखित शब्द कहे। ।। १०-१-३६ ।।

वसुदेव उवाच श्लाघनीयगुणः शूरैर्भवान् भोजयशस्करः । स कथं भगिनीं हन्यात्स्त्रियमुद्वाहपर्वणि ।। १०-१-३७ ।।

Vasudeva said: My dear brother-in-law Kaṁsa, you are the pride of your family, the Bhoja dynasty, and great heroes praise your qualities. How could such a qualified person as you kill a woman, your own sister, especially on the occasion of her marriage? ।। 10-1-37 ।।

english translation

वसुदेव ने कहा : हे साले महाशय, तुम्हारे भोज परिवार को तुम पर गर्व है और बड़े-बड़े शूरवीर तुम्हारे गुणों की प्रशंसा करते हैं। भला तुम्हारे जैसा योग्य व्यक्ति एक स्त्री को, जो उसी की बहन है, विशेष रूप से उसके विवाह के अवसर पर, मार कैसे सकता है? ।। १०-१-३७ ।।

मृत्युर्जन्मवतां वीर देहेन सह जायते । अद्य वाब्दशतान्ते वा मृत्युर्वै प्राणिनां ध्रुवः ।। १०-१-३८ ।।

O great hero, one who takes birth is sure to die, for death is born with the body. One may die today or after hundreds of years, but death is sure for every living entity. ।। 10-1-38 ।।

english translation

हे शूरवीर, जिसने जन्म लिया है उसकी मृत्यु निश्चित है, क्योंकि शरीर के ही साथ मृत्यु का उद्भव होता है। कोई चाहे आज मरे या सौ वर्षों बाद, किन्तु प्रत्येक जीव की मृत्यु निश्चित है। ।। १०-१-३८ ।।

देहे पञ्चत्वमापन्ने देही कर्मानुगोऽवशः । देहान्तरमनुप्राप्य प्राक्तनं त्यजते वपुः ।। १०-१-३९ ।।

When the present body turns to dust and is again reduced to five elements — earth, water, fire, air and ether — the proprietor of the body, the living being, automatically receives another body of material elements according to his fruitive activities. When the next body is obtained, he gives up the present body. ।। 10-1-39 ।।

english translation

जब यह शरीर मिट्टी बन जाता है और फिर से पाँच तत्त्वों में—पृथ्वी, जल, अग्नि, वायु तथा आकाश—परिणत हो जाता है, तो शरीर का स्वामी जीव स्वत: अपने सकाम कर्मों के अनुसार भौतिक तत्त्वों से बना दूसरा शरीर प्राप्त करता है। अगला शरीर प्राप्त होने पर वह वर्तमान शरीर को त्याग देता है। ।। १०-१-३९ ।।

व्रजंस्तिष्ठन् पदैकेन यथैवैकेन गच्छति । यथा तृणजलूकैवं देही कर्मगतिं गतः ।। १०-१-४० ।।

Just as a person traveling on the road rests one foot on the ground and then lifts the other, or as a worm on a vegetable transfers itself to one leaf and then gives up the previous one, the conditioned soul takes shelter of another body and then gives up the one he had before. ।। 10-1-40 ।।

english translation

जिस तरह रास्ते पर चलते हुए मनुष्य अपना एक पाँव जमीन पर टेकता है और फिर दूसरे पाँव को उठाता है या जिस तरह वनस्पति का एक कीड़ा पहले एक पत्ती पर बैठता है और फिर इसे छोड़ कर दूसरी पत्ती पर जाता है उसी तरह जब बद्धजीव दूसरे शरीर का आश्रय ग्रहण करता है तब पिछले शरीर को त्याग देता है। ।। १०-१-४० ।।
