- siva.sh/mahabharat/adi-parva/87/16[य] न तुल्यतेजाः सुकृतं कामयेत; यॊगक्षेमं पार्थिव पार्थिवः सन दैवादेशाद आपदं पराप्य विद्वांश; चरेन नृशंसं न हि जातु राजा ॥ १-८७-१६ ॥[ya] na tulyatejAH sukRtaM kAmayeta; yògakSemaM pArthiva pArthivaH sana daivAdezAda ApadaM parApya vidvAMza; carena nRzaMsaM na hi jAtu rAjA ॥ 1-87-16 ॥'Yayati said, 'A king, despite being a ruler, should not desire the well-being obtained through unrighteous means, nor should he covet the prosperity of another. Even if faced with adversity by divine ordinance, a wise king should never engage in cruel actions, for no true monarch ever would.'' ॥ 1-87-16 ॥
- siva.sh/mahabharat/adi-parva/87/13[परतर्दन] पृच्छामि तवां सपृहणीय रूप; परतर्दनॊ ऽहं यदि मे सन्ति लॊकाः यद्य अन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि शरिताः; कषेत्रज्ञं तवां तस्य धर्मस्य मन्ये ॥ १-८७-१३ ॥[paratardana] pRcchAmi tavAM sapRhaNIya rUpa; paratardanò 'haM yadi me santi lòkAH yadya antarikSe yadi vA divi zaritAH; kaSetrajJaM tavAM tasya dharmasya manye ॥ 1-87-13 ॥'Pratardana, one among them, inquired, 'O most graceful one, I am known as Pratardana. I inquire of thee whether there are any realms for me to enjoy as the fruit of my religious merits, either in heaven or in the celestial expanse. You, who are well-versed in all things, answer me.'' ॥ 1-87-13 ॥

On earth, I always sought to act virtuously. How can I accept a gift now, having never done so before?' ॥ 1-87-12 ॥

And, O ruler, I have indeed given gifts to Brahmanas as is appropriate."' ॥ 1-87-11 ॥

- siva.sh/mahabharat/adi-parva/86/9[य] अरण्ये वसतॊ यस्य गरामॊ भवति पृष्ठतः गरामे वा वसतॊ ऽरण्यं स मुनिः सयाज जनाधिप ॥ १-८६-९ ॥[ya] araNye vasatò yasya garAmò bhavati pRSThataH garAme vA vasatò 'raNyaM sa muniH sayAja janAdhipa ॥ 1-86-9 ॥'Yayati explained, "Truly, a sage or Muni is one who, residing in the forest, remains close to a settlement, or while living in a settlement, keeps the wilderness near."' ॥ 1-86-9 ॥
- siva.sh/mahabharat/adi-parva/86/7दशैव पूर्वान दश चापरांस तु; जञातीन सहात्मानम अथैक विंशम अरण्यवासी सुकृते दधाति; विमुच्यारण्ये सवशरीरधातून ॥ १-८६-७ ॥dazaiva pUrvAna daza cAparAMsa tu; jaJAtIna sahAtmAnama athaika viMzama araNyavAsI sukRte dadhAti; vimucyAraNye savazarIradhAtUna ॥ 1-86-7 ॥'A learned individual should transition to the Vanaprastha stage of life after fulfilling his duties, once he has gained mastery over his desires for pleasure and accumulation of wealth. When someone passes away in the forest while living the Vanaprastha lifestyle, they enable their ancestors and successors, spanning ten generations including themselves, to merge with the Divine essence.' ॥ 1-86-7 ॥

Then, from Nandana, I fell, my religious merits exhausted. In the heavens, I heard the lamentations of the gods, O king. They mourned, 'Alas, what a tragedy! Yayati, despite his virtue and sacred deeds, is descending, his religious merits depleted!'' ॥ 1-84-19 ॥

Destroyed! Destroyed!"' ॥ 1-84-18 ॥
