तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दशग्रीवो महात्मनः । देशकालहितं वाक्यं भ्रातुरुत्तरमब्रवीत् ॥ ५-५३-१

The ten-headed Ravana heard his brother, the great soul Vibhishana's timely advice which was in keeping with the laws of the land and replied. ॥ 5-53-1॥

english translation

tasya tadvacanaM zrutvA dazagrIvo mahAtmanaH । dezakAlahitaM vAkyaM bhrAturuttaramabravIt ॥ 5-53-1

सम्यगुक्तं हि भवता दूतवध्या विगर्हिता । अवश्यं तु वधादन्यः क्रियतामस्य निग्रहः ॥ ५-५३-२

sanskrit

'Indeed, you have spoken very well. Killing of emissary is censured (in sastras). Surely we will impose suitable punishment other than killing. ॥ 5-53-2॥

english translation

samyaguktaM hi bhavatA dUtavadhyA vigarhitA । avazyaM tu vadhAdanyaH kriyatAmasya nigrahaH ॥ 5-53-2

कपीनां किल लाङ्गूलमिष्टं भवति भूषणम् । तदस्य दीप्यतां शीघ्रं तेन दग्धेन गच्छतु ॥ ५-५३-३

'The tail is dear to the monkeys and it is an ornament for them. Set fire to it at once and let him go with his burning tail. ॥ 5-53-3॥

kapInAM kila lAGgUlamiSTaM bhavati bhUSaNam । tadasya dIpyatAM zIghraM tena dagdhena gacchatu ॥ 5-53-3

The demon king having ordered thus, the monkey was taken by the ogres round the junctions of the roads all over the city with his tail on fire. ॥ 5-53-5॥
